Gautby Road lake in Birkenhead
« on: September 16, 2010, 10:54:27 am »

Hi all

Put this here as I reckon the I.C. Brigade, that might use the lake at Gautby Road in Birkenhead, might be likely to be on this part of the forum most.

A few years ago I was a regular at Gautby Rd with my Class D CMB67 powered Multi.
Then I "dropped off" a bit and only went up there just occasionally.
Problem was I often turned up to find the Yacht guys there (and therefore not PC to start racing around with a multi  %) ) = waste of a journey and a bit of a disappointment.

Now I have my Irvine 61 powered Swordsman I would like to go there again.

Question = Is there a timetable or any other way of knowing when the lake is free (on a Sunday) for I.C. use ?

Regards to all

John in Chester

Get hold of Dave Marles at Prestwich, I believe he uses the lake.

Aye thanks for that, I do know Dave ( I always get my boat out of the water when he puts his in as his boats are usually too fast to see  O0 )

I was hoping there was a Birkenhead Model Boat Club "timetable" or similar (shame they don't have a lil website)

Hi Mark (and all   :-) )

Thanks for that, it was those "impromptu" visits that were the problem, as I often went up on a Sunday to find the yacht boys there  :((

I will try and contact the Birkenhead Model Yacht & Power Club via their website
(I just found it here = http://www.birkenheadmodelyachtclub.co.uk/ )
and see if there is a "timetable" of water usage.

Mark, I see you are in the Trafford club, I fly model aircraft near Trafford on some weekends, is your water open to I.C. powered visitors ?
(thinks = I could combine the 2 and make a Schneider trophy race sea plane  %% )

Just an update...

I went up to Gautby road on Sunday, arrived around 1 p.m.

Quite a few folks there  :-)) ( Including Kieren the Birkenhead Model Powerboat Club secretary ) Most of the "fast boat" brigade up there are using petrol engines these days  :o

I was made very welcome, the weather was very nice (for a change) and a good time was had by all  :-))

Yes, as long as a club member is there to open the gate, you can park right next to the lake.
If the gate is locked, you can still use the lake but you have to walk less than 100 yards with your gear.

If alone, watch out for "scallies" as they will nick anything not bolted down given half a chance.
However, there is very likely to be club members (and myself) there on Sunday afternoon.

They don't have a formal frequency peg system, they just rely on calling out and checking who is on what, so be careful in that respect too, as some of their boats are BIG & FAST !!

Ive been up  a few times as a none member, I tend to go early  sunday morning. There is usually a chap ther who opens up, as generally on alternative weekends they have yatchs then ic next weekend, but dont start till 10.00. I always ask if its ok, and am always made to feel welcome, but always leave before 9.45am. In summer I also did the odd sat morning, or if off work the lake is free every weekday.

If going early, I would not use ic, as the lake is very close to residential area, and is bordered one side by trees, so the noise can be a bit loud in the direction of the houses, so it might not be very welcome early sunday!

I live local to this lake, and will make no apologies for the warning, there are a lot of kids about when sometimes they should be at school, try not to go alone if at evening or saturdays, and dont leave ANYTHING unattended, one gate in, one gate out, and before sailing if its something fast, have a look at the lake fro any debris that might have been thrown in! Take old boots, loads of duck crap around the side, but no duck problem if sailing!
.Saying all that, its a fantastic boating lake, very big, rectangular, accessible with waders if required so not too deep, short walk from car even if car park is locked, Access all around, no reeds or trees, and quite sheltered :-))

I was talking to the clubs powerboat secretary on Sunday and the subject of webcams came up.

It was decided that the club would buy an outdoor webcam (mounted to look out over the lake), and I would connect it to the clubhouse  broadband router so anyone can view it.

Good idea for checking the weather and who is there  :-))

You might get an idea by using a parked car as a reference "scale" in this pic =

You do get some pleasant younguns too at Gautby Rd.

Last Sunday I spent some time chatting to 2 small groups of lads & girls about the boats and they were polite and genuinely interested.

Future boat owners and club members possibly  :-))

Thanks Ghost.

The ice had cleared last Friday and we were looking forward to our first race for over a month
on the saturday but with around 2 inches of snow on Friday evening, needless to say no one
ventured out and yet another race was cancelled.

Three of us have now taken up 1/9 and 1/10 RC buggy bashing while the bad weather is around, two more
members showed interest and have ordered their buggies.

Its a  bit risky running them on the grass  near the lake as there all learners so all we need now is a good spot to run them.
