Stripping the paint from a Victoria hull
« on: December 17, 2010, 03:45:15 pm »

I've got hold of a wreck of a Victoria with the idea of making it better than new.
The hull has been painted a couple of times very badly.
I need to strip the hull and deck back to the original plastic.
Modelstrip sounds good but having to fit the pasted hull into a bag overnight is a bit awkward.
Do any of the other suggestions i.e. Dot3 brake fluid / Oven Cleaners work on the Vic hull?
Any ideas Mayhemers?

Is the hull plastic or GRP?

Ned,
If it is plastic then the paint can only lay on top of the plastic so something like Mr Muscle should be able to soften/remove the paint without damaging or being absorbed into the hull.

Should have qualified plastic as ABS plastic
Electronics, Timber,West and SPS epoxy systems
No probs but 'plastic' toys  Help!

I had some metal parts that had been painted with humbrol and some had been sprayed primed first then good gloss I was de greasing them before I set about attacking them with a 3m mop left them a couple of hours came back turned hot tap on to wash it off and the paint came off like a skin, I had spent two weeks doing a chassis that was a pig to get at some parts and this way it just fell off . if it is metal quickly burnish surface and get a quick coat of etch primer on or it will rust , etch primer is not good on plastic by the way.
