building MV Port Adelaide
« on: December 20, 2010, 05:43:24 pm »

Hi folk, after being away from boat building for some 30 years i thought i better start again !!.
Looking for a ship to build , i came agross photo,s of MV Port Adelaide and knowing Cornwall
model ships carries the drawing for this ship, what better place to start.
Iv always liked cargo boats, have good lines and lots of detail

First move was to send for the drawing and have them enlarged from 160th scale to 80th scale
this gave a hull length of 6 foot 3 inches.
To make the bulkheads i transfared there shape onto thick card.

These templates where then used to mark out on 4 mm 3ply all 16 bulkheads.
Into the base of each was cut a 4mm slot some 20 mm in deapth, again the upper edge of
each bulkhead had a simular slot cut.
The side veiw of the keel was cut out of 4 mm ply having a deapth of 20 mm, alowing the bulkheads to sit on the keel
striaght lengths of 4 mm where placed in the top slot  and used as a jig to keep the bulkheads in line

Now that Christmas ,the snow and mince pie,s have all gone ill post a little more
on the build of the "port".
With the bulkheads and keel making up the skeleton, it was time to think of the
plating of the hull sides, for this i chose 1/16 3ply.
Being a cargo ship and the center section being no more than a VERY large box
this makes the plating easy in the main.

The transition from the vertical sides to the horizontal keel plates was made in the
time honored way with balsa wood stripes, shaped to suit.

Moving forward to the bows, a template was cut in the shape of the upper edge
of the sheer, again from 1/16 ply, held in place with map pins and Evo-stik weatherproof
adhesive,

The bows where then compleated, again with balsa strip.

Never did post all the build but here,s a few shots of the finnished item, it sails very well
but i think it needs more power as its hauling 50 pound of water balast.
I was thinking of totting the balast around with me but settled for water balast instead.
I used a caravan water pump with a "push to make " switch in the line, so now its, down
to the pool water in, sail, then water out and away back home.

There,s a few things that need adding but now i know it aint going to do a "TITANIC " they will be added
soon
cheers
