« on: February 20, 2007, 12:32:05 pm »

I have seen some nice well decked out scale sail.
Please share your tips.

Here are a couple of mine.
An axe and a boat hook.

Made out of poxy putty and kebab skewers.
The boat hook fell off the wood so I fixed with CA. I took a 10ft bargepole as my scale reference fro 1/15
The end of the axe handle was formed by crushing in pliers.
They were made dirty.
Painted them up. The axe head was then filed back to give the edge effect.
The boathook was painted black then touched with gold to make it appear the brass was showing through the paint.

Tiger, I'm afraid I cheated on the baskets, When on holiday in Cyprus recently, we were in a local artists studio and on the counter there was a bowl full of them at 10p each Couldn't resist a quids worth. Smashed up a lump of charcoal and glued the bits in to look like galley coal.

The seams are a Z shape in profile.I use starch spray to make life easier and a 1m ruler.
    Iron the first fold,
double back the cloth leaving the ruler in place,
move on to the next fold etc.
stitch a line along the seam then turn over and do the other side.
It sounds easy but it took a while to get the hang of it and a lot burnt fingers.

Tigertiger, to make baskets there is this link (in French) http://navi.modelisme.com/article378.html

Basically, the guy use cotton strings that he knits over a form. Dyed with coffee, varnished, and there you go !
