small motor for the Carina boat kit
« on: January 25, 2011, 09:59:02 am »

I've been asked to help a cub group build an old kit they have. The kit is the Carina by Graupner and specifies a Johnson 170 or a Monoperm 4.5v motor
The power is a flat 4.5 torch battery!.
I've done an internet search but can't locate the two suggested motors.
A throwaway line in a Youtube video of the model says it uses 10 watts so the load consumption would appear to be 2 amps.
Can anyone suggest a easily obtained suitable motor?
I've got about 2 weekly meetings before I need to have the motor installed.
Thanks in advance for any recommendations.

You could probably get a "Marx monoperm" on the Flee, but have a look a the Graupner 400 series.

20" Graupner launch, a 400 run at its rated voltage would be very adequate.  Possibly very satisfying.  Go for the 3 pole version.

I agree, a Graupner Speed400 6.0v or 7.2 volt (7.2 is a more sedate motor)

Have a look in Youtube -

Hi,

there was a guy in Germany who took a Mabuchi RS 380 in his Carina together with watercooling .

Thanks guys for the responses. The Speed400 looks very suitable and it has helped me identify these on web sites among the long lists that sometimes appear. I think I'll go for the 7.2 version.
No knowing any better I was only searching for 4.8v motors so never considered a 6v or 7.2 v motors.

Regarding Sven's point there are two videos on Youtube of the Carina. One shows it sailing as specified, the other shows a souped up version so on the water it looks more like a fast electric such as a club 500.

There is also one of a modified Carina firng projectiles.

I've shown the videos to the Cub group to wet their interests but, as it is their first attempt, we are sticking to the sedate version as designed.

Thanks again for pointing me in the right direction.

My Carina runs a 360 on 12 volts and is a bit flat. Go for a 400 as suggested and you should have no probs. She is a lovely little boat for reasonably calm water and easy to build.

Mine is on the list for a spruce up and re-motor so that my son can have it.

I built one for my son in 1980, ran on a flat battery, 4.5 volt torch. Was OK but had no idea they were still made. Was nice to build and looked good, lightweight radio and LiLo cells, very nice. How much are they today?

The Lotse is about the same size and a similar sort of hull shape.  I think it was intended to chug around, but accidentally putting the wrong motor in after deciding to deviate from the instructions, using a 6 or 7 cell pack instead of the recommended 6 volt SLA, gave a very satisfactory result.

The hull shape would also lend itselt to a warship upperwork ie. a fast patrol boat or similar.
