HMS Manchester
« on: February 01, 2011, 09:55:19 pm »

There are a series of progs coming on channel 5 following the HMS Manchester on her tour of duty in the Caribbean and
how they followed and captured a boat carrying 16 million pounds worth of drugs.
It starts on Monday 7th Feb at 9 pm. Should be good viewing.

She will be alongside at Liverpool cruise terminal over the weekend; no visits for the great unwashed though.

Maybe look at it from the crew's point of view - it is their home after all. If you happened to live in a council house would you be happy for the general public to come visiting just because they 'owned' it. There are 'proper' Navy days held from time to time and the crews make the taxpayers pretty welcome.  I don't think there is a general right to go aboard just because the ship has tied up in a particular location.

Colin,

That is a really hairy excuse, trying to keep in their good books  are we?
Of course the public don't have a "right" to visit the ship but it makes for good PR and in most cases gives the duty watch something to do in my experience.

Apparently she is now open for viewing on Sunday and sails on Tuesday.

Dear boy, what gives you the impression that I'm "moaning"? A mere gentel "poke" is the intent.  The only thing I'm "moaning" about is that I won't be able to record her arrival for various reasons but, I have plenty of pictures of her anyway.  Forthcomimg visit include Gloucester, Liverpool and Koln as well as the Internationl Liverpool Boat Show, so I will have plenty of subjects to record in the coming weeks.

And that is a rather uncalled for comment LB.  <*<

RN vessels put in to ports around the coast at regular intervals, sometimes they are very open to the public, sometimes it may be just the upper deck and perhaps the bridge, other times the purpose of the visit may preclude public access. But I can imagine that if you are unwashed then you might not be too welcome..

Back in 2009 I toured one of the hunter killer nukes in commission at Devonport. It was unbelievably cramped and you couldn't help literally bumping into the crew all the time. The route included the officer's quarters and the wardroom and couldn't have been anything other than intensively intrusive yet the crew took it all in good humour as part of the job. So no, I'm not going to have a moan about them.

You are quite right Colin - unless things have changed since I was in you had private visits when the ship was not open to visitors,
no official functions onboard, no flagshowing etc., then you would have the official visits - host the mayor and local dignitarys,
visits to local hospitals (usually the ships chosen charity) play football against local football/rugby teams AND the ship open
to visitors

Hope that answers your query Liverbudgie

Liverbudgie You seemed to be questioning why the ship was not open to visitors. I was giving a possible explanation as to why
or why not.
