glow/gas/nitro engine advice
« on: April 29, 2006, 04:06:51 pm »

HI there

I guess nitro/gas engines aren't particularly popular judging by the number of topics here.

Anyway, I would like some advice on buying an engine for a Dumas PT109 which is 48inches in length. They recommended a 4 stroke 0.65cu in engine (an O.S which is far too expensive). I would like to use a 4 stroke rather than a 2 stroke as apparently they produce a more realistic noise (the boat will mainly be used on the sea so I won't be upsetting any wildlife). However, I am having a really hard time researching any engines. There does not seem to be a good website that talks about the different engines or manufacturers, preferably in the UK.

Could anybody shine a little light on this for me?

Thanks very much in advance

Well here we go, first post here. Expat living in Sweden. Mess around with offshore boats and petrol engines.
As far as I am aware the only available 4-stroke marine nitro is the OS. If you want to run petrol then again the available marine engines are 2-stroke. You may want to look into the newer generation weedeater motors from Honda, they are 4-stoke but you will have a job to convert them to water cooling.
There is one site I know of where they discuss the petrol 4-strokes and that is http://p202.ezboard.com/bamericanscaleoffshoremodelboatassociation
You may have to sign into EZboard to read it.
Here are some 4-strokes for marine use but if you are worried about the price of the OS these are not the motors for you.

Website in the UK? This is the internet, who cares where the website is!

See the reply to your same post in Speed, Power, I/C, Nitro and Gas Boating + OMRA section of the forum.
Add to that post that the quietest tuned pipe for nitro engines seems to be Just Engines "Purple" range of pipes which still give good speed against cost.
Another site for you could be ]http://p197.ezboard.com/frcracingboatsfrm1 but it is mostly for the racing guys.
