MFA 919 Series Motor Suppression
« on: February 07, 2011, 08:52:52 am »

Im using MFA's 919 Geared Motors in my current project, i read recently that these motors would benefit from a 3-capacitor suppressor set, the motor came as standard with one already fitted.

My question is this when i come to buy a set of 3 for each motor how are they to be wired up to the motor? and i know there to be soldered, before i get a daft answer.

If someone could provide a doodle or photo of some description that would be great.

The other question is what do these capacitors do to the motor and why should we use them? do they make the motor more efficient electrically?

Motors not only use energy to be turned, while turning they act as generators and return some of it as well.  Often, it is returned at a very high voltage and over a wide range of frequencies, giving rise to sparks and radio interference.  The object of using capacitors is to give this energy somewhere to go before it has a chance to be radiated by the motor wiring.  So the motor is no more efficient, but its controller has a better chance of working.
In a sense, there is an increase in efficiency in that you get the boat back under control, so you don't have to make as many.
