Upgrade advice for 1980s Tony Abel sailing yacht
« on: February 05, 2011, 08:58:08 pm »

Hi, am total newbie to this, so forgive my ignorance. I inherited a Tony Abel sailing yacht built by my late father and which we used to sail together on round pond in London when I was little. Thought it would be fun to get it operational again and sail it with my children!

I have the remote and a box of bits and pieces but am thinking things must have moved on quite a bit since it was made. I don't have the original transformer and all the rechargeable battery packs are corroded.

Am after advice really on what I need, where to buy, what it might cost and whether I'll also need to replace the servos, etc.

I've attached a few pics to give some idea of the type of boat (it's about 4' long and 7' tall). As far as I know everything was working the last time my dad had it on the water, though this was probably 10 years ago at least.

Thanks, Alfie

Alfie,

Lovely yacht, and an excellent reason to get her back on the water :}

The person who did the installation was very organised and efficient, and the good news is that the servos are just right already

I think that the transmitter (the bit in your second picture) is a Flight Link  (from the colour) and if the battery corrosion can be fixed it is easy to buy new rechargable cells, and also the charger for them

In the boat the white box on the left contains the 27 Mhz receiver and a switch for 4 crystals (and the names tell us it is 27MHz)

So if the radio can be got working you can go sailing directly - 27 is legal for any model

I have NO IDEA what the printed circuit board beside the rudder servo is - possibly a throw adjuster for the sailwinch servo?

In an ideal world I would suggest getting someone familiar with R/c to give it an eyeball - they would be able to test each component and mimimise expenditure
How about finding a local yacht-sailing club and taking it along?

In an ideal world I would suggest replacing the 27 MHZ radio  equipment with 2.4 GHZ - specifically a Planet 5, which in my opinion is the most economic (non-toy) radio and batteries to suit, and

ENJOY

probably not knowing the age or reliability of the transmitter or receiver id be inclined to upgrade them for a modern 2.4 ghz set , your servos will plug straight in without problems , im sailing a kyosho seawind using a planet t5 2.4ghz set up £ 50.00 approx . for the receiver power you need a 5 cell (6 volt ) pack from  the component shop about £7 a transmitter and receiver charger can be bought for around another £10 . it may sound like quite an outlay but by upgrading to the newer 2.4 ghz radio you also get the peace of mind of no frequency clashes when you are sailing !
