F-14 Help
« on: February 08, 2011, 11:13:00 am »

Hi,

i am trying to use all of the channels on my F-14. my first question being can i just use a simple switch either on-off or on-off-on and just wire the switch up with red white black with the white in the middle. if i understnad correctly you can change the red and black wires around at the transmitter end, but not at the receiver end as it will damage the servo.

does anyone have a copy of the instruction manual that comes with the F-14? my controller is about 10 years old and i have no idea where ive put it. ive been looking around on the internet but i can't find the full set of instructions.

any help or advice on the matter willbe greatly appreciated.

many thanks

With a minor but important modification you can.
A plain switch, that takes the centre contact right down to 0 volt should be avoided with the older F14.Ten year old sets contains an NE5044 programmable decoder which switches off redundant channels by taking the centre pin below a threshold.

With a switch, you have to reduce the voltage swing by inserting a resistor,I think 100k will do,in the centre line. That reduces the voltage swing to an acceptable level.

For slider controls,I use 5k linear pot on 1" centres with the addition of 8.2k resistors to restore the voltage swing.

Hi,

You can find the F14 Manual here ---------

Hope it is useful for you.

thanks for that link. that was just what i was after. many thanks.

just ordered some 150k resistors so all should be well. better safe than sorry. so looking at the diagram the red lead should be on the centre pin with the resistor. i can't believe the expansion modules are soo expensive and then the decoders are even more expensive. surely there arent that many functions on one boat. but then i suppose if you want to control everything individually it might.

If you use a make-before-break switch the 0 and 5 v lines would momentarily short on the connector. It would not damage the radio but might cause a glitch on all 7 channels
In the unlikely event that you have that type of switch you should put a 150k on orange and brown and make the red connection direct.

Hobbyking do an inexpensive channel multiplexer but I have never used one.
