From Friday 20th – Sunday 22nd January, Alexandra Palace in London will be transformed into a hub of activity with planes whizzing overhead, tanks rolling purposefully by and clouds of steam filling the air for the 16th London Model Engineering Exhibition.
Regarded as the premier modelling exhibition in the London and indeed the UK, the exhibition is the largest show in the UK and blends the full spectrum of modelling from the traditional model engineering, steam locomotives and traction engines through to the more modern gadgets and boys toys including tanks, boats, aeroplanes and helicopters!
Visitors can travel between the show’s different zones, trying the hands-on activities and watching technical demonstrations designed to engage with young people and spark a passion for a hobby that can last a lifetime.
The Model Active Zone features action displays from the British Model Flying Association (BMFA), the UK Tank Club and Gauge 1 Model Railway Association and the 16mm Association who present live steam locomotive on the model railway and there are working locomotives that visitors can travel behind and experience live steam.
The Imagineering Foundation, an organisation formed in response to a drastic shortage of skilled engineers in the UK, will be educating and entertaining on their display with a range of fun, hands on activities for younger visitors, all illustrating the basic principles of science, technology and engineering.
For adults, the Society of Model and Experimental Engineers (SMEE) will be introducing people to the hobby by letting them try their hand at turning something on a lathe and machining a small item that they can take away with them.
Exhibition Manager, Avril Spence, commented: “We are delighted to be holding our 16th London Model Engineering Exhibition at Alexandra Palace. 2012 is set to showcase an outstanding array of talent that not only celebrates the Queen’s Jubilee and the London Olympics but also commemorates the talent of British modellers throughout the years with our Great Modelling Exhibition Competition.”
There are over 70 specialist suppliers at the show who will be selling a full range of tooling and materials for almost every project. Many will also have parts that can be used for motor cycle and vehicle restoration and other hobbies.
All in all it’s sure to be a capital day out for every generation of the family to enjoy!
