Please dont mention Rowboats. Next thing you know the Navy will bring back Roman style Rowing galleys. No fuel bills and could be
rowed by imprisioned Mps of which the numbers are increasing. John.

Correct me if I'm wrong but I thought a governments prime duty was to be responsible for the protection of the country and
then to look after the welfare of its citizens.  Does anybody believe the armed services of this country are now fit for the purpose of
defending the country following the swingeing defence cuts. If not are not the government as a whole and the P.M. and Minister of
Defence in particular guilty of Treason.
Any chance of legal aid to test this out in court.

If you do, you will find that the government are pretty well responsible for legal aid and the court system as well...

Instead, it is understood a new panel of experts will be set up to look at public access and biodiversity within the publicly owned woodland.

So that'll be friends, family and the lad that stopped DC having a hot crumpet wedged between his buttocks at school :D

Somebody from the Woodlands Trust asked on five live radio if it would be the same panel of experts who suggested selling the woods in
the first place

Can anyone think of any time that this 'government' has had a policy and stuck with it when someone opposed it? Any policy?

We seem to be 'ruled' by a set of focus groups and popularity polls. with a prime minister who believes in doing u-turn after u-turn as a substitute for clear leadership...

Surely a considered "U-Turn" is better than just blindly going ahead with a flawed idea....which, if memory serves, is more or less what the last lot of muppets used to do, and look at where that got us to.
The way I'm beginning to see much of this is recaltricance by the Sir Humphreys that Cameron is having to battle with to get anything at all done that may (or not) be beneficial to us great unwashed. Having said that, surely making the Forestry Commission more efficient and productive would be better than just tossing out the whole notion of State ownership. It would also help if some of the Union leaders would engage brain and at least try to "modernise" a little. BY.

I heard on the News today that a special police task force has shut down a counterfeit Olympics ticket scam..Another waste of money?

IMO the easiest way to identify any counterfeit or stolen tickets.... is to check anybody working class's ticket for any of the premier events (100metre final etc)

Unless of course, they are well connected ..there is no chance of that ticket being "legal"

The ideal is actually having sensible ideas and carrying them out. If an unforeseen problem arises, it's a mark of a good government to admit that they were wrong and reverse their position. But I don't think that's what's happening in this case.

The decision to sell off the forests was a stupid one on every level. Apart from anything else, far from saving the taxpayer money it would have cost a lot. But this government aren't reversing the decision because it's bad - they're reversing the derision because people are complaining. That's the mark of a weak government. Imagine how well they will stand up for us in Europe if they fold whenever the going gets a little rough...

Good point DG. The present Government are showing every sign of being amateurs. Pressing ahead enthusiastically with what seems to them to be a bright idea and then being appalled when the inevitable Law of Unintended Consequences rears its head because the thing hasn't been thought through properly.

I've seen it all time and time again, in comes a new broom which throws everything into the air in the name of progress only to find that in trying to resolve one set of problems another has been created.

The watchword should always be that before you try to change something, understand it first. It's the way it is at the moment for a reason and you have to understand that reason if you have any hope in changing things for the better. But of course politicians don't have time for that.....

Don't crow too soon.... {:-{  The government will wait a while and bring back the sale under another guise... :((

A lot of MP,s think that as they have been voted into Parliment, that they are "special people" who have the "insight" to carry out what they think is necessary for the good of the people.

What this means in reality is the best interests of them, the rich and the interest groups who these people really serve. ok2 ;)

Well these defence cuts are looking more and more stupid - there are now protests across a lot more of the Arab world - who knows what will happen.
perhaps the government has a chrystal ball and knows it won't affect us.  Then again perhaps they dont.
I bet the governments of the  southern European countries are getting a bit twitchy.

Power corrupts.  Its that opportunity that would-be politicians find so attractive.

Not really, it's a people thing. There are certain types of people everywhere and they tend to go into politics because they enjoy having power over others and imposing their views on the populace at large. Not all poloticians are like that but a very large proportion of them seem to be.

There are over 300 million people in the United States and look what sort of jokers make it to the top of the pile - people like Sarah Palin....

Yep. Politics does not make people turn.

It is just that a certain kind of person is attracted to politics. And some of these make it up the ladder.

I have know two members of local parties while in University. One red, one blue. Neither fitted in well with the rest of us, they were 'different'.

One thing about politics in China. People do not have to worry about being re-elected. This means that once they make a decision they get things done. Sometimes the public are up in arms about a new policy and it is not followed through, but generally policies are carried through and change happens quickly.

Its all about finding people who will take direction.. Thats how Sarah Palin and the other unlikely characters are selected by the various lobby groups, large corporations and other rich interest groups...It takes a large amount of money to get elected for anything in the USA...If one your backers owns press and media helps

I have always thought that if someone wanted to be a politician, they should automatically be disqualified.
