Bottle boat Brig
« on: March 05, 2011, 06:14:00 pm »

I've made a bottle boat with the brig rig. Waiting for the ice to clear before I can test it. Right now it's set up as a free sailer, but I plan to make an RC version. More details and photos here:

A 30 sec, 8meg .mov has been posted. The brig sails well. Need to tweek the fin keel attachment to allow keel to slide further aft for a reach or run, but beating goes well. I estimate the bottle brig makes 1pt to windward.

Thanks, Kiwi :-).

The boat sails better than I expected. Freesailing models have a charm of their own; the only requirement is that the pond has reasonably easy access to all sides, since your craft may not end up where you planned (due to windshift, or captain error).

My experience has, uniformly, shown me that model squareriggers are perfectly feasible. Freesailers work fine (duplicating Boyle's squarerigger experience of the 1930's). The RC setup for controllable models (a requirement if you don't have the ideal freesailing pond) is not hard if you use the Parallelogram method, and can be accomplished with standard servos (instead of expensive servo winches).
