cutting plastruct square
« on: February 25, 2011, 12:35:38 pm »

One of the many things I struggle with is cutting profiled plastruct square ie, round bar with a square cut end.

I have a plastic guillotine, but its worse than useless, whatever I do with it comes out at a nice angle. As it cuts, the blade is deflected away from the vertical by the cutting pressure.

So, can anyone recommend a cutter that will perform well, plus with the ability to allow mitre cutting?

Thanks

Ian

Thanks for that, I have tried mitre boxes without too much success.

The little cut off saw looks interesting, but its in USA!

Still looking!

Can you not score around its circumference, and then break it along the score with a sharp bending movement?

Rex,

Yes that often works, but there is often a raised centre left, then when I try and sand it off, I end up with an off square cut!

A technique one of my customers told me about is as follows; Using a Razor Saw, look at the reflection of the material you are cutting, when it is straight with the material you can see, cut. This also works for mitre cuts, try it, I was impressed.

As with all tools, use less pressure and let the tool do the work, takes a bit longer, but a better result.

Stiffer blade (if available) will minimise deflection as will using a sharp blade.

Using slower cutting speeds, either manual or mechanical, help when cutting some "Plastics" as it minimises "melting".

I have the same problem.  Can't cut straight to save my life. {:-{

In the 'works for me' dept, I stick some abrasive paper on a strong flat piece of wood to make a sanding stick.

Carefully fix the piece in question into my cordless screwdriver and slowly spin it up like a small hand lathe.  Don't use a Dremel or similar as they go way too fast.

Then apply the sanding stick to the face of the work piece.  Taking it slow is good.  Take care on longer bits too as they whip a bit.

Like I say, works for me.  Hope it works for others too.

Regards

woodworkingprojects.co.uk  have a splendid little Japanese jig that comes with a fine-toothed pullsaw which is excellent for cutting things square and 45 degrees - but it's not a conventional mitre box. They are not too expensive and Jim does really quick deliveries. As you use a pull saw, the blade does all the work. I cannot recommend their stuff highly enough.

Good that it works Boatmadman  :-)) Just posted it to give you an idea to allow one to build ones own, although it would probably have cost five times the amount  {-)

Wonder if you could buy a cheap Pullsaw by buying a razor saw and turning it end for end ??

  Regards  Ian.
