A Maltese Luzzu
« on: February 28, 2011, 09:33:54 pm »

About a month ago I spotted an article in Model Boats magazine and having returned from a holiday in Malta, thought I'd give it a go .... my only amendment to the plan in Model Boats was to give it a 240 motor and small prop to get me out of trouble. It certainly looks different to the other yachts on the pool.

Admirable model of a Luzzu.....How do you get past the tacking problem "ie: the yards being on the wrong side when on the port tack?" Do you have a false keel and what dose she sail like?

Hi Shakey,
Nice model. I think I have seen the end to my lateen rig dilema.

Following Jimmy's line of thought, and looking at the photos.
With the sails being loose footed, being on the 'wrong tack' is probably not much of an issue.

Thanks for the nice comments on my Luzzu, the sails are in a fixed position but swivel around the mast and there is no keel, I just weighted the bottom of the model with lead and hoped for the best. In light winds she sails fine but I wouldn't like to put her on the lake when it's gusty.

Sails fine on starboard tack and with the wind behind her and I use my motor for assistance on port tack ... cheating I know, but needs must.

If you would close up pictures of the rigging and hull, just ask and I will post some on this thread.

I would very much like to see more of her "Please" ....I've been in and out of Malta more times than I care to count and I allways find the Luzzu's fascinating.

OK, here we go with a few pictures, hopefully Larry this will spur you on to finish your model.

You can see from the picture above my "cheat" with the small prop

Under the rear hatch you will see my rudder servo and a botch up speed controller ... microswitches used for full forward and full reverse ...

And so onto the rigging ... all I had to go on for this was the pictures published in Model Boat magazine Jan 2009 ... so a lot of it was just guess work and fingers crossed ....

Larry, I picked up some lightweight scrim from a show some time ago and used that.

Thanks for the photos. they answered some questions I had. I used to sail on the Luzzu's back in the 60's (used to pay them the princely sum of 1s 6d for a lift out to the ship ) I think you might improve your sailing if you remove the stays and fix the tack  of the yard so it has a min of movement very much like a lugger ,sailing Luzzu's didn't have fixed stays but like luggers used the haulyard set to windward as a stay and it was moved when she tacked or she had two halyards on each mas,t also the Maltese rig allowed them to lift the yard so the butt of it could be passed around the mast with out dropping it like Arab Dow's
I am at the moment changing my Lugger to a "Lorcha"but there are some photos in Yachts & Sail R&D (18 century Lugger) Your Luzzu is a very nice little vessel.

Try using cheap shower curtains for sail cloth. most of the cheap ones are white or off white and light weight (£2 - £3 )are plastic but look like cloth they are water proof you don't have to hem them and you can colour them with wood dye and better still they don't stretch

HI JIMMY, nice to here from you , and for info .....i wonder if you have rigging detail of a LUZZU?
i built  mine about a year ago but got stuck on rigging detail.
the plan of model boats luzzu was measured from a gift shop souvenir so not a real concept......
BUT still enjoying sail rig models and learning a little bit on every model i do , like my latest NZ TROW. LARRY W. :-))

Ok here we go. For a start no 2 Luzzu's  or the smaller sister ship the Dghajsa,... are the same, none were built from plans they were all built by eye. Most set the setee lateen sail but some set an Arab type lateen but I know of one (back in the early 60's ) who set standing lug sails, some had jibs others didn't so you pays your money and takes your chances (Look at the bright side ,,the rivet counters can't say that was wrong) Right I'm going with the setee lateen rig
Masts 2/3rds the lenth of the hull , the yards are the same lenth as the hull ... the foremast is stepped aproxametly 1/4 of the lenth aft of the stem and the main is stepped aprox. 1/4 lenth from the stern post
The yards are hung at aprox. 55 or 60 deg angle ....Remember none of these fig's are hard and fast feel free to change things

I know it's not the same but the lug rig and the settee lateen are controlled the same way  the French put their yards and sails on oppsit sides of the mast on their big luggers
any way this is the way I control Lug sails

Hey Larry, see, all you needed was a little prod in the ribs to get you working again on your Luzzu, looks great and it would be nice to meet up one day and sail them together, all the best Alan
