sea commander
« on: March 13, 2011, 04:50:49 pm »

Having acquired my late fathers love of model boats, i was very pleased to find that Jotika are now producing a version of the Aerokits model of the Sea Commander.
This boat was made by dad for my brother and myself in the sixties i will always remember how good it looked on the water.
With this in mind i have recently purchased the new kit and it is now approx 75% complete.
I would like to compliment jotika for this model, so far it has been a joy to build and i would reccommend it to anyone.
I will post some pics when it is complete.

Have they got it out? It's not on their web site, though it was due in Oct 2010.

I wonder why they haven't brought out the Crash Tender - that would sell like hot cakes....

Sea Commander is basically a scaled down Sea Queen isn't it? So probably a lot easier to produce, just scale down the CNC files. They had a full page ad for it in March Model Boats.

The Sea Commander in my opinion is a much nicer boat to look at, it is considerably smaller and therefore easier to transport.
If the rumours are to believed the whole range of Aerokit boats are to be reproduced in the future, if this is correct i am looking forward to getting a S

When I visited Jotika a couple of years back the only new Aerokit on the horizon was the Sea Commander and that has taken quite a while to go into production. Jotika doubted then if there would be sufficient demand to bring others of the range to market although I would agree with DG that the Crash Tender might be worth a punt.

No doubt they will see how things go with the Sea Commander before deciding whether to take things further.

I spoke to John Wright of JoTika last August 2010. He said:

1 - These are complete re-designs of the boats
2 - There is not a huge market for them, in spite of the nostalgia-value.
3 - They were working on the Sea Commander.
4 - He thought that the next one to do might be a smaller craft - possibly the Nymph - but he did not say that he was expecting to kit all the Aerokits....
5 - They were also considering moulds for the Crash Tender/PTB fittings. That suggests that they intend to bring those boats out. But I do not think they are very profitable, and I think they are last in the queue for resources....

Lesro sell a version of the large Fire crash boat  http://www.lesromodels.co.uk/shop/product_info.php?cPath=85_118&products_id=258

It's made for them by Mike Cummins... I spoke to Mike at the AllyPally Model Engineering show.

The only thing I did not like about the boat was the price.... having said that its well up to modern kit specs

I have attached some pics of the model as she is at present, it just requires the cabin roofs painting, glasing a final coat of varnishand the last few items fitting.
As for the cost please remember this kit is complete with a 700 motor, propshaft, coupling and a rudder.
In addition the quality of the wood in my kit was excellent and the model was very easy to construct.

boat is very light, especially being on a single 8 cell Nimh pack and not a lead acid battery, will run at that speed for about 15 - 20 minutes
boat is glass clothed and spray painted with aerosols so no weight again
