Chinese Junk as in sailboat
« on: March 15, 2011, 10:19:42 am »

Hello ,As advised by the man who lives there ,I have a metre long model ,sailing ,and it needs bringing back to look like it has come from the Coast of some where round China ,Its all there ,the sails are made as authentic as poss ,with the bamboo type slats ,this was as to speed the theory of wind and sail ,very advanced ,all those years ago ,however this wont buy the baby a new bonnet .What I am unsure of ,do the sailors of these Junks ,paint them in a specific way , that is ,,eye on the bow to see where they are going ,and a dragons tail on the stern ,.I am only guessing ,as its 45 years since I was out there ,and I cant find anything in books the looks like it could possibly be so .This was made by a chap ,and he new what he was doing ,it has been on the water at New Brighton ,2 years ago ,and again on Sefton in Liverpool ,and it does sain Very good .So The correct paint, coulor ,eye ,etc would be very helpfull . It has to be ready for an event ,and It really wants to look the part .  thank you in advance   Dave 301 bounty ,from sunny Liverpool ,in the South end by that glorious Sefton Park ,And not far from the Newly refurbished garden festival site ,with a lot of very attractive  items ,,Liverpool ,its all happening .

Here are some pics of smaller Chinese boats. These have eyes, on the sides and a nose and tail on the bow plate and stern.

There are tow boats here, but seems like the same crew.

Here are some pics from Model Shipwright number 133. The Junk build was serialised, but I only got number 133.

The bow plate has a picture of a crouching dragon painted on it.

Dave @ Tiger Tiger
Mark nice pictures of those Sampans, I often used to get from ship to shore in one of those in Hong Kong in the 60's but those weren't motorised but usually sculled by a young woman with her baby strapped to her
Dave, I found This bow picture of a Foochow Pole Junk. These were some the most seaworthy sea going Junks and were found all over the Far East 50 / 60 years ago
Sorry I don't have a stern shot  but will keep looking  :-))  Check out my new thread Lugger to Lorcha in Yacht's & Sail R&D for rigging ideas
Mark ---How do I get the spell check to except new words, it Keeps telling me there is no such word as a "Lorcha" and it has only a limitid Nautical vocabulary

I don't think you can, because the dictionary is on the central server, and not local to your machine (unlike word processing software on you home puter)
