My First "Plank on Frame" build - Fairmile D 32nd Scale
« on: October 26, 2010, 03:27:13 pm »

Well here I go.....

Having recently returned to the model boat world, I built a Graupner Bugsier 3 kit. This I use regularly at Setley Pond and enjoy being in the Club there. I now find myself looking towards my next build. I do have a list of boats I want to build, the first few being kits. This is going to be expensive!! So, I have decided to start a Plan build that I can work on as money allows.

After spending many hours trawling the internet, I have purchased a plan of the Fairmile D at 32nd scale from The Model Dockyard. The Fleet Admiral saw the plans and she has put a limit on size. So the 1100mm LOA of the model will just about be the largest I can build for the time being.

So for the next few days I will be glaring at the plans trying to get some idea of how to interpret the drawings.

I have a steep learning curve over the next few months.!!!!!!

Hi Ken,

Some suggested reading for you.

Bluebird's build thread on rescue launch, built with double diagonal planking. There is a wealth of knowledge here.

Birthday weekend is here and birthday money being spent...

I now have enough wood to start the framework. After a false start with Greaseproof paper..... Glue really doesn't like it!!! The traced out frames are now stuck onto the plywood and with a bit of daylight tomorrow I will rough cut everything out.

It is indeed and pleasure finding how helpful everyone is, helping me to get to grips with interpreting the drawings etc etc.

Once I have the first pile of sawing done I will start posting pictures.

Here's hoping for a relatively painless start to some serious model building.

I'm pulling up a chair for this one. O0

Do you know what type of boat you are building, MTRB, MGB or Rescue.

I intend to build MTB 629, just because it was built/assembled up the road a little from me (Tarbet). After I get a couple of other builds out the way.

Lack of tools and lack of knowledge have led to a disastrous start to my build. I am fast coming to the conclusion that my ideas far outway my abilities.
For the moment, the rocky start is now in the bin. Tooling is improving, knowledge I hope will improve.

For the moment....

I GIVE UP...

<*< <:(  ...never give up Ken.........in model boat building ...there is little more beautiful than a traditional wooden planked hull    :embarrassed: ...but the model you chose ultimately had a painted hull  :o

So just regroup your thoughts & explore the Mayhem WEB pages for ideas....you may find an alternate pre manufactured fiberglass hull which would simplify this your first scratch build  :-))

There are many members here who will assist in constructive comment

Ken.  Don't give up,  we all have problems occasionally - my current model is now in a worse state than it was a month ago
as I have had to lose a lot of weight to regain a stable model-  I have been staring at it for the past three days and at 4 a.m. today
the solution came to me and I can now restart building.  Just redo the planning stage before you make a new start, a bit like chess plan a few
moves ahead to where the problems may lie and work them out beforehand - on a scratchbuild project some of our fellow mayhemers may have
spent a couple of years in the planning/research stage before the build starts.
Remember any problems - there are plenty on here will give you advice.

Ken
Pop down to Brixham where you can see a real Fairmile run by Greenway Ferries
The hull is original although the superstructure has been changed

Don't give up Ken. We've all gone though the same at some stage or another.  Building the hull is like learning to ride a bike in that it's a total b****r to start but once you've got the idea you wonder why you ever worried about it. Yes, you'll still fall off occasionally but ........ :-))

Pictures would be great for when I get going again. Thanks.

My problems are at a basic level. I can't interpret drawings very well!!!!

I have been persuaded not to give up completely. I am going to keep on with the framework I have already and see what I can achieve. With the low prices of wood I can easily start again or remake a few parts I have messed up on.

Hi Ken,

Don't give up just yet!

If I might suggest go to http://www.modelboatmayhem.co.uk/forum/index.php?topic=9758.0. Go to reply 2 and read 'Bluebird s' build. He tells you how to take the lines off the plan etc.

Don't be put off by the fact there are lots of long thin strips - these are because he covered the hull with double diagonal planking. The basic hull with a strip at each corner is fine for covering with ply in one sheet. Any areas that the ply wont bend into infill with balsa and filler.

If you can't understand a point its much easier to ask the question relevant to someone Else's build.

Hope this helps.

...thats the spirit, I work full-time and and have 2 dogs who need to go out lots, plus kids so, my only free time is spent slowly doing boats and it relaxes me, and frustrates me as well, but the more you do, the more you will know, is there a club nearby?

Just thinking Ken...... :o...there are a number of model boat builders here with varying levels of skill......ranging from "first hull build" to the "Master Class"  O0

We then have the catagory where most call home which is..... "in between the other two"  {-) ...I am a proud member of this latter group  :D ....the only real qualification to progress to this catagory is to complete your "first hull build"  :P

Why not post a few images of your work to date........it will be much easier for group members group to offer constructive comment......Derek

I have decided not to give up. I have been looking at various builds on MAYHEM. and I feel a different approach and method will serve me better.
So next pay day I will buy more wood and I will start again.

hi ya there Ken

could you share with us, your proposed thoughts of how you are going to attempt to build this model?

As this may help us to help you because, as you have discovered, there are numerous builds on this Forum and numerous methods of building.   It could help prevent you from struggling along in the 'dark'.
