Sea Patrol U.K.

National Geographic channel is showing this program on Monday nights here in Canada. Got to admire these guys for the tough job they do. Some of the chopper rescues by the R.A.F. are just incredible. And the R.N. and R.N.L.I. are equally a good. Makes you appreciate that there are people out there willing to go to almost any length to assist in time of trouble. :-))

They are my heroes too.  Living in the mountains we often hear the Sea Kings from RAF Lossiemouth or HMS Gannet (Prestwick) thundering through a snow storm ... what's that , they cant fly in snow ? Oh no ? Bullsh.... When visibility is so bad they follow they power lines, they have been known  to stop and ask the way at remote farms due to landmarks obliterated by snow and guidance systems on-board going off due to weather conditions or other reasons.  You might see a clip of the Royal Navy Sea King on a mountain rescue watching the rotor tips and the skipper asks the winch-man in the side door how much clearance he has, the winch-man replies " Plenty of room Boss ,4feet, 4feet, 3feet... thats good Boss, hold, hold" then goes down on the cable to an injured climber stuck on a cliff edge. Heroes every damn one.  Or trying to match the rise and fall of a ship on a rough sea in a gale at night. The mind boggles at the skill and bravery of these people. Of course we have HM Coastguard helicopters too and various civilian air ambulance helicopters. Good guys and gals all.

Back in 71 or 72, can't really remember exactly, I was on HMCS Yukon doing a deployment with STANAVFORLANT. Before an exercise there was usually helo traffic between ships, and we always liked to watch the RN pilots in their little choppers (Wasps?). We had no flight deck, and these guys would fly so low over our quarterdeck that passengers could almost step off the bird. This was at 20kts in the Atlantic. One guy had us all laughing when he stationed himself abreast the bridge about 150 feet away, flying BACKWARDS!
