The Boat that Guy Built
« on: March 23, 2011, 10:28:45 pm »

Has anyone else been watching "The Boat that Guy Built" on BBC1? Pair of nutters, albeit very capable and amusing ones, fitting out a narrow boat. The theme is making use of the inventions of the Industrial Revolution, so the shower is powered by a steam pump, and so on. Real fun, and well worth catching up on on iPlayer.

Good bit of fun though  {-)

They did the bathroom the other week, with a steam engine driven shower pump.

Just a thought, have the BBC discovered a young version of the late, great, Fred Dibnah?
This lad has all the enthusiasm for engineering / manufacturing that the great Fred based his shows on.

I don't think his efforts at baked beans will become a Delia highlight though  %%

Sadly just another example of the shallow 'reality stye' TV. Get a 'personality' who is a 'character' and a 'theme' to justify the whole thing and a poofy producer who's technical understanding doesn't go beyond operating a can opener.
As with a number of programs Dibnah, Car is born, garden/house makeovers, the programm makers only want to film the people and the fact that they happen to be doing some activity which the likes of us are actually interested in is just an inconvenience to them.
Certainly hope he doesn't get used as a token technical person. He doesn't seem to have any technical knowledge beyond the script, as was the case with Fred D once you got past hammering rivets.

His day job is a HGV Engine builder so he must have some engineering skills and knowledge

What a welcome early evening relief he is. No "East-Enders" sort of screaming and shouting. Gentle humour that's entertaining, interesting and educational. I loved the gentle "put-down" about getting a sheep to make his cotton sheets! We could really do with more of this kind of programme. BY.

actually ned, he is  a fully time served diesel engineer and fitter, not just a diesel engine builder................... and I would love to see what bee could do with either a diesel engine or a Honda Fireblade at 190mph down the Creg ny Baa straight, lol

I actually find it very interesting, I guess if there was a programme called The Bismark that Guy built, or, The Lifeboat that Guy built or the Model that Guy built then everyone would have their say and comments   O0

A very interesting programme fo me as a non-seaman or boat owner.

Yes these programmes are interesting. But lets be honest. All these guys are just personable front men. The real work is done behind the scenes. I really dont believe for one moment that they really contribute much
to the script. Still better than some programmes. Personally i always thought fred dibna to be a hypocripte
Going on about heritage whist demolishing landmark Chimmleys. John.
