Tug Ionia - unusual Kort nozzle
« on: March 27, 2011, 10:33:39 pm »

Hi Folks,

I came across the tug 'Ionia' lying in Bideford and took some pics for further reference for possible future projects.

http://www.thamestugs.co.uk/SHIP-TOWAGE-LTD--%5B2%5D.php
Scroll down about half way

The Kort nozzle arrangement struck me as unusual , I've only seen the like s on American river tugs.

If anyone is interested I do have a few more photos.

The Avenger has a similar nozzle, I believe it's a 'Thrustmaster' brand.

Hi The Ionia. Avenger,Hibernia, Sun XXv and Sun XXVI were all converted in their later lives to the TOWMASTER Nozzle system of a fixed nozzle with three rudder blades. as none of them had had nozzles when built it made a marked increase in Bollard pull and manouverability, The Ionia for instance when built had a direct Reversing Polar engine which means the engine had to be stopped te enable it to run in reverse after moving the camshaft to alter the fuel timing, when converted to Towmaster gear she had a gearbox fitted as well which made ahead and astern much quicker,as the engine only ran in one direction.

Shame to see the old St Mawes looking like that - she looked stunning when at Falmouth!

My father was chief in the Sun 25 when she was converted and he told me that the improvement in her pulling power was hugely impressive.

She had the kort nozzle since it was fitted for work on the thames. Proved a popular tug I am told by ex crew.

ok, but when she left Falmouth I think she went back to the Thames then? Its a shame she has been rusting away in Bideford  for a few years now. I have a large model of her, but I wont tell anyone if you dont that mine has an ordinary rudder and propellor on her!

Hi Rottwieller  Dont worry when she was first built she did not have the Kort nozzle she had an open prop and single rudder my model of her is as built without the kort.  geo, :-))

when she left Falmouth and run aground she enden up under arrest on the bouy just below Rochester bridge on the Medway, then she was taken to Bideford its just a great shame that a lovely and workable tug has ended up like she has <:(  <:(  <:(

I have spent many a happy day aboard her when I was younger.

My husband and father-in-law spotted the Ionia last week, still moored up in Bideford harbour, with no sign of activity.  {:-{ It seems that the plans to convert her into a cafe have run aground, as this is more than three years now. It's a shame to see her abandoned, but it seemed a rather odd idea anyway, we will try to find out the situation from the local council, it would be better if a restoration could be made instead.

Hello. My first post. I was drawn to the forum after typing "Ionia" into a Google search. I was surprised that the vessel was still afloat. All credit to Richard Dunstan Ltd. The only model boat that I have ever built was one at 1/24th scale of Ionia. The model was launched in 1970 and I have recently revived her. A new radio and replacement of some obsolete components in her system now leaves her fit to displace her 58 lbs again. The model used to impress Grand children and I now hope it will do the same for a group of fellow volunteers at a waterways project in Gloucestershire. I will try to get down to Bideford to see the real Ionia
Had a couple of pics to post but could not reduce their size below the 161K limit.

Welcome BrianFJ  :-))

Have you tried opening the Images in 'paint' ? If you haven't already, you can open an image in paint and resize it there.

Ionia certainly was/is a beautiful looking tug.

That looks a real cracker - like it very much, was it scratch or kit built?

If my memory serves (never reliable these days), United Towing's 'Lloydsman' was fitted with one of these. Norman Storey, Lloydsman Skipper and later UT Super, thought it was the bees' knees - or words to that effect.

Some beautiful models. I can now attach the pics that I omitted on my first post. Those afloat date back to the '80s.
Around 1979 I had the good fortune to look round the tugs Alfred and Sauria of the Alexandra Towing Co in Felixstowe. The Skipper of Alfred  had worked on Ionia which then belonged to the same company being ex William Watkins Ltd. I was told then how Ionia had been improved by modification with the Kort nozzle.
You will see from the hull picture that she is dated by the Taycol Supermarine motor although this one has ball bearings and carbon brushes.
The model was bread & butter scratch built at 1/24th scale and at 4' 2" and 58 Lbs does not launch in one piece, but is good fun.
