This was a splendid day, with fantastic weather. I was little concerned when I first got up as early on in the morning, things were looking decidedly grey, and it was quite chilly. However the sun soon got his hat on, and by about 11 'o'clock most of us were down to our short sleeves.

We had about thirteen attend on the day and about seventeen boats present with a steady stream of spectators throughout the day. Now looking forward to the Summer Dive-in, which is held at St Albans in Hertfordshire. This is weekend long event, with 6 hour sailing slots each day. The pool is a bit smaller than Brockwell, but at 100ftx60ft and a 9ft deep end is still more than big enough to accommodate large boats.

The following photographs were taken by Roy Palmer and were shot towards the end of the day. Other photos and video should follow, and will hopefully be added to this thread. No film or pictures from me I'm afraid- I was kept a little busy to take any pictures this time around.

Here are the U47's. Roy's is pretty much standard and Trevor's is fitted with a 825ml pistonn tank.

Nice pictures, you haven't got a close up of the motor wiring/capasitors have you? I had to look for replacements as i only have one set. I got a couple in Maplins (Stevenage).
I've had drill problems too so still waiting to put the mess, whoops sorry i meant finely cut sections together.

Thanks everyone, I've been fiddling with the brass bits at the front of the boat today, cutting bits off with a hack saw. My soldering iron likes to stink alot but has a phobia to solder. :embarrassed:
Decided to attack the body work again to relieve the frustration.

Clean the brass well. Plenty of heat - good big soldering iron (50 watts) and use some extra flux - Fluxite does the job for me!

You may need to clean the soldering iron tip too- probably oxidised, or might have burnt out, they do after quite a bit of use.

It's brand new but only 30w and £4.99. Looks like i might be needing more oomph. I'm slightly puzzled as to exactly what i'm supposed to do with the bits here anyway. At least i know the black wire's live and the red's earth eh.  8)

One end of the soldering iron soon get too hot to hold... Thats all you need to get right, and everything else will be downhill from there  ;)

I wish you were there too!

We aren't a club. These events are open to anyone to come along. We get people from various organisations, and some who just prefer to remain independent.

We have a weekend Dive-in in June. I've never seen a weekend long model submarine event take place in the UK, so it's a shot in the dark. If it's successful, it will become an annual event.

Andy is giving a rather one-sided description of the events which he and Ramesh run as private individuals.

There are many submarine events in the UK which have been run for many years including for example Merstham (Coming soon) This is  weekend event and is a proper show with a swimming pool and it is run for Charity.

More details of all these events on:

Events like the Merstham show are very nice, and I've attended in the past. It's worth pointing out that access to the pool is restricted to 'slots' of about half an hour (30 minutes) at a time and you tend to get about three or four slots in a day to sail. So that gives you about and hour or two of sailing time each day. For some that is enough.

At the Dive-ins, providing there are no clash in frequencies, you can sail for a full six hours for each day which usually exhausts the endurance of the operator before the boat.

The pool sizes are also considerably larger, which better suits the bigger boats like the Typhoons etc.
