M4 shafts and drive belts
« on: March 24, 2011, 12:18:37 pm »

Hi,

May be a daft question, but if I buy an M4 prop shaft with a threaded end for the propellor and a plain end for the motor, what diameter is the plain end ? Is it, logically, 4mm. And, if so, I assume an M5 is 5mm.

I am looking to source some drive belts and need to know the shaft diameter.

Speaking belts and gears, I am looking at Motionco. Is there anywhere else?

I need gears for a 385 motor and an M4 shaft. Motionco do gears with a 4mm bore and also gears with a 2.38mm bore which I assume will fit the 2.3mm 385 motor shaft.

Any help or advice much appreciated.

All the best
Sandy

I'm pretty sure that the drive on a 385 is 2.3 mm.

Just checked on MFA como site
I stand corrected it is actually 2.305 mm (for the rivet counters %) %))

You assumed correctly, M4 is 4mm and M5 is 5mm.

Another source here:

You are on the right track with shaft sizing. Any thread stated as m4, m5 etc indicates that the max diameter of the shaft is 4 or 5mm etc on the threaded part, with the thread being cut into that diameter.

What it doesnt state is that the rest of the shaft is that diameter, but unless there is a statement otherwise, it is safe to assume an m4 shaft (for eg) is 4mm dia along the whole length of the shaft

Got a catalogue from these people some years ago - they did parts for modellers and prototype engineers - prices seemed okay at that time

I use MFA gears and belts, very reasonably priced

I have a number of different size pulleys and belts so can change the gear ratio, I think they come as a 3mm hole and you have to drill out to your required size :-))
