HMS Victory?
« on: April 13, 2011, 09:14:17 pm »

A local chap called at my door and presented me with his late father's model boat which he started to build. It's in a bit of a sorry state but looks possible to complete.  ok2

She looks quite a nice ship to complete as it was a Kit and came with most of the parts. I asked if there was a drawing and he promised to have a look, so I'm asking on here is anyone knows who might have produced this version.

I enclose a few pictures of her, as you may be able to tell from the set up "who might have designed her".  It's a very light model so obviously for static display at the moment  ( but who knows ?)   %)

Well, that's a turn up for the books.  It was dark when he handed it to me and I know not much about this era of shipping.   {:-{    I did a search of the Web and came up with the Victory

Keep em coming and when I get the drawings I'll let you know what it's supposed to be.   :-))

Early to mid 18th Century I'd say.

i've been searching all the model kits of similar and the only one that comes close, as yet, but not close enough is jotika's AGAMEMNON...... but i am stumped.

mind you the LION rampant figurehead looks familiar, and at first thought of VASA, but not that either.

Think I've found her

HMS Alcide

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HMS_Alcide_%281755%29

I found a reference to her having a gold painted lion as her figurehead

Mine only has two rows of cannons so you are correct about my Title being wrong.  Perhaps the MODS could put a question mark at the end please.

Who would manufacture a kit of this relatively unknown ship do you think ?  I'm now dying to see the drawings.

Keep you posted

Goodnight

I am not sure she is a British ship. She has a raised quarter deck and separate poop. If she is then I agree with Colin, early 18th century. She could well be Spanish..

If it is the Alcide she was a captured French ship which would explain the non-RN standard design

Hi,

I am almost certain that the vessel in question is the Billings Norwegian Lion or Norsk Love. I built this model in the very early 70's and to the best of my knoledge she is still in production.

Hope this helps,

Cheers,

Ellan Vannin.

Inded, we can see the mizzen chainplates, but nowhere to step the mast - presumably you have to dig a hole in the poop deck!

It does look like you are correct. She matches your picture to a 'Tee'

The mizzen mast has indeed fallen out and left a sloping hole in the deck. Upon further inspection today it appears to have been painted with a coarse brush and not in the desired places. I really don't know if it's worth pursuing as a rebuild but will hold on to it until the guy returns with any other parts and drawings. The decks have been planked but the width of the joints is the same as the planks !  A bit disheartening really but looks great from the other end of the room, up on a shelf.   %)
