It's always nice to see the brass as original unpainted.

Regarding the glazing you have to watch out for misting when the glue is applied. I use cockpit glue applied with the finger, thinly in just two spots around the rim.

Hope this helps,

Ken

I have been using double-sided tape for glazing cabin windows because of the problem of the perspex reacting to some glues, however this may not be that easy with small items such as portholes.

If you leave the brass unpainted don't put the boat into salt water! I ended up with green portholes that I have never been able to totally clean up. You could paint them with a protective transparent lacquer which is what I will do next time!

Unless you are lighting the void behind the porthole,
why glaze?  On a real ship you would need your nose
against the glass to see inside. The glass was thick
to be able to stand up to wind, waves and whatever
so from a few feet away it acted as a mirror.

Just seemed natural to glaze them as the windows came with the portholes, i know they are well above the waterline so i see what you mean. :-))

All the portholes I've bought have come with 'glass' so I always glaze mine.
No chance of leaks then from a large wash or sailing on windy days.

I left it a bit late unfortunately, by the time I realised what was happening the brass had started pitting. I ended up cleaning them and then painting with brass paint which wasn't as good an effect as I had originally.

I meant that there may be no need to glaze as in see
the inside unless the inside is furnished.
I did not mean leaving open holes in the hull.
The portholes could be stuck straight on the hull
with a dark shiny paint to represent the glass.

I have found that an effective method is to punch out the 'glass' from thin transparent plastic using a leather punch. Paint the plastic dark blue on one side first and then position the glass unpainted side up into the porthole with a dab of polyurethane varnish or a water based waterproof glue.

Ned the portholes i have got have a turned spiggot on the inside so they require a hole drilled in the hull to sit flush.
