I am working on a similar scaled sub and am considering fitting real wood decking. Are yours individual strips or a sheet that has beed scribed?

Hi mankster it is real wood deep scribed you can cut into individual strips if you want to.

Thanks Trevor, I have been able to track down any pre scribed wood sheet yet. Gluing individual strips 1mm wide sound a bit of a pain! Another alternative is plasticard that already comes scribed to represent wooden decking but its not as nice as the real thing.

Water jet cutter?

Another idea- the wood grain laminate that you get on office furniture.

You mean using water a water jet on a flat sheet to represent individual planks? Do you you know some where that will do a small job like thing for reasonable cost?

Another option is to make a master from balsa strips, then cast a rubber mould then mould a complete deck in PU resin. You can add fillers to the PU resin which make it look exactly like wood, but it will be totally waterproof and tough as old boots.

Interesting and interested, what is and where can you obtain "p-u resin"??

PU is short for polyurethane resin. It usually comes in white or tan color (although it is usually translucent until it sets), but you can also pigment it to any colour you like. You can get lots of different types of this resin with different properties (hard, soft, rubbery etc.). The rudder and hydrovanes shown In Trevors build are cast from PU resin.

Good UK suppliers are Alec Tiranti (google them), and if you can find a stockist Smooth-on do an extensive range range of this type of resin.

thanks Subculture will follow up the info, I have a Type 7 hukk from Darnell and the deck leaves something to be desired as far as detail is concerned, thinking I would do a wooden decking (with balsa) and "stiffen" this, but open to other options!
