Tamiya's Holiday Buggy
« on: April 10, 2011, 09:10:01 pm »

I know it is old News but the re-birth of the 80s "Classics" Tamiya has put the "Holiday Buggy" back on the Market. It was , for me far too expensive, at close to 200 pounds, but I have just received the latest catalogue from Conrad Electronics and it is there for 89 Euros, about 75 quid, with ESC and motor too, not bad, and tempting too!

Its not the same as the original release as it uses completely different chassis and running gear.  This is a good thing as the old sand rover/holiday buggy chassis was primitive to say the least!

Sand Rover was my first R/C Car. Had a lot of fun with it, and managed to wear it out. Got replaced with a Grasshopper, which has also been reissued. Be nice to see a Sand Rover reissue, but I think it would be a bit more tricky to work the shell onto a more modern chassis.

My first R/C car was a holiday buggy, I had many a good time with it and we used to race in a school hall with siliconed foam tyres. I fitted a motor that had the same sized can as the 380 motors supplied but it was only 11 turn, it kept up with the majority of 540 motored cars of the time much to many folks surprize.

The new Holiday Buggy uses the same shell, although with 2 holes in bonnet for dampers to poke through, but chassis is basically a 2wd buggy so wheels dont sit inside the arches and are yellow in colour.    Cracking chassis though, and with a bit of work can be made to look better,

this is the new Holiday buggy built as per kit...

this is mine... narrowed the track front and rear, shorter shocks on front and mesh covering the holes in shell and better looking wheels/tyres. Along with original bumpers.

Holiday Buggy was my first RC car too, I too had many a good time with it although never raced it.

That looks a lot better. How did you manage to narrow the track, did you use different suspension components?

Having a fair few cars also means I have a fair few spares and odds n sods lying around.   On front I have used wishbones from an older Tamiya, the rear I had to cut and modify the original wishbones and cut and shorten the driveshaft.   Steering links and upper links were simple enough turnbuckle items.

Hey Nordsee do me a favour will yah over here in Aussie we dont get much info.
I was excited when you said Conrad catalogue. I have inherited even though its old from an old Hobby shop that closed down a while ago , the Conrad Tornado. She is an Electric boat about 1000mm in length with 3 drivers sitting in it like one of those ocean racers.
Can you lets know if they still make it.
This tamiya would love where I live in Outback australia plenty of red mud and dirt roads to run it on it would have a ball.
Tks

BD your modifications really improve the model no end seriously going to have to consider that one now.  Do you have any pics of the conversion and a list of what parts were used and from what kit?

This is the original 80s release

Im sorry I dont have a parts list or even what kit the parts came from,  I have a feeling front wishbones may have been from a Tamiya TL01 but not sure, they were just wishbones I had collecting dust in a parts lot I have (boxes and boxes of stuff)  The rest was just mods really, narrowed stock rear wishbones and upper wishbones, front upperlinks and steering links could be made from m3 threaded rod and then use ballends like I did.

This one actually looks better than the original, and I bet it goes a lot better too- http://www.tamiyaclub.com/showroom_model.asp?cid=106928&id=3680

Bit of an urban myth that the body is unpaintable though. You can paint it, but you need to shoot it with a special plastics primer which you can obtain at good car paint shops. They use it for painting colour coded plastic trim like bumpers etc.

Sorry for the delay,  I have just looked in the new Conrad Catalogue and there is no sign of the Tornado. Sorry. Have a look on their website www.conrad.de I think they do  it in English as well, lots of lovely goodies there!
