Suggestions on what to see on an upcoming visit to the UK
« on: April 14, 2011, 07:11:42 pm »

I have gotten involved in RC boating recently (electric scale: tugs, pleasure craft, etc.), live in Florida and, as we are apt to point out (whether you want to hear it or not), it's a great place for RC boating.  I have built the Dumas Jersey City and will soon start on the Model Slipway Assurance.

I am planning a trip to London from 6 June to 18 June and would like to visit as many shops, museums, trade shows, exhibitions, club events, etc. relevant to my new hobby as possible. Are there any suggestions you can provide along the lines of my interests?  I am accompanying my wife (who will be on a business trip) so during the week I will be completely free to travel in the London environs or further if necessary.  I will not have a car, am familiar with public transport of all kinds in the UK and could also travel virtually anywhere in the UK if an event or place warranted it.  Weekends are also possible as my wife is extremely supportive of my hobby.

So, please get back to me as soon as you can with your thoughts or, if you are not able to help me, perhaps you can recommend someone else to contact.

Thanks very much.

Try visiting Greenwich Observatory,
you can catch a boat on the Thames.
Or HMS Belfast and the Imperial War Museum.
Chatham Docks have a very interesting ropemaking museum.

This show falls on the middle weekend of your trip:

Sat. 11th & Sun. 12th June 2011
Northern Model Show,
Doncaster South Yorkshire Aircraft Museum,
Dakota Way,
Airborne Road,
Doncaster,
DN4 7FB

Many of the main UK model boat retailers and manufacturers will be represented there. Doncaster is approx 170 miles north of London and has mainline rail links to most places. Driving from London is a cinch - follow the A1 north until you get to the M180, then turn right and you're within five miles of the museum.

Bring money!

Ken,

it's a great pity that you end your visit on the 18th June, otherwise you could have attended Portsmouth Model Boat Display Team's event on the following day (19th June).

These displays involve 18th century square-riggers joining in battle; WWII convoy displays and WWI manned battleship recreations, all supplemented with pyrotechnics, bangs and flashes, model boats that are designed to explode, break in half and sink. This would give you some idea of what can be achieved if you venture just that little bit further with our hobby. Obviously these displays are weather dependent, but provide great entertainment for the people of Portsmouth (and beyond).

To get some idea of what the Team do, please look us up at:

www.pmbdt.co.uk

Nevertheless, welcome to UK and enjoy your stay. :-))

Thanks to everyone who has responded to my request.  I am sure my trip will be fun and memorable.  To the guy who suggested that I "bring money" -  I will do what I can to support your economy.  Obviously, you are all invited to cross over to my side of the Pond.  We could use some help too.  If you do and you wind up in South Florida, I belong to a great boating club and we would welcome you to our lake.

Exhibition Road in South Kensington, London is home to several of the capital's major museums. The Science Museum, Natural History Museum and the Geological Museum are all there, and free to enter.

In particular, the Science Museum has a large collection of boat models, including many of the original builders models for the 1700 and 1800 Royal Navy ships. http://www.sciencemuseum.org.uk/visitmuseum/galleries/shipping.aspx refers...

Might I suggest a quick dash to Bournemouth and a visit Westbournes, probably our largest model boat shop.

People travel from all over the country to visit here.

The suggestion for Chatham forgot to mention the Lifeboat museum and the three open ships (Victorian 'gunboat' to WW2 destroyer). Really more than one day, but a train ride from London

Well worth a visit, I believe there is a Submarine there too, also a well stoicked Model Shop! Last I heard a ticket was valid for 12 months so you can visit as often as you wish for the same price.

If you're on a boat on the Thames you could go and visit Kew Gardens, which should be looking good at this time. That's a great family day out: http://www.kew.org/visit-kew-gardens/index.htm

The great thing about Kew is that, if you are into steam and taking a trip to Kew, just round the corner is the world's largest collection of steam pumping engines - many working - here: http://www.kbsm.org/

Boat trips and steam engines combined, a trip on the paddle steamer PS Waverley if she is anywhere near the south coast or Bristol Channel. O0
