Preparing for next build HMS LION C34
« on: April 17, 2011, 08:16:17 am »

I have now got plans/hull ready to start my next build which will be F14 HMS Leopard in 1/96 scale, but as I start one
I like to get prepared for the following build which I have decided will be HMS Lion also in 1/96.
She was the only one of the 3 cruisers in her class that was not converted into a helicopter carrying cruiser and was our last
conventional cruiser.  I know Jecobin supplies plans for the helicopter conversion but does anybody know of plans for the class
as built.  Also I dont want to build the hull if possible and am sure that someone used to provide a hull in GRP but I can't find
anything on the web.  Has anyone any idea where plans/hull can be obtained.
any info gratefully received.

Thanks Colin - I thought it was Cammett but there is nothing on their website - will have to give Robin a ring.
PS Have those plans arrived safely??

even quicker 3 built in the clyde according to the National Archives of scotland the drawings went to the following places;

HMS Lion -Scotts, Greenock (Yard No611)
Drawings will be held at the Glasgow University archives (who's rates make the NMM seem reasonable)

HMS Tiger- John Brown, Clydebank Yard (No593)
Drawings also in Glasgow uni

HMS Blake- Fairfields (Yard No 710)
Drawings will be in the Glasgow Archives (mitchell Libruary)

National Archives http://www.nas.gov.uk/guides/shipbuilding.asp

Glasgow Uni archiveshttp://www.gla.ac.uk/services/archives/collections/a-zofguides/

Hope this helps

Robin at Cammett also has the main 6" turrets, 3" turrets and funnels (though these will need modifying as they are the raised helicopter cruiser funnels). I bought a Tiger hull and the available fittings from Robin, but I haven't made a start yet as I'm working on a Battle class destroyer. I'm using plans from the NMM and Jecobin. Mine will be HMS Tiger in all gun form.

Thanks RSM - enjoy your battle class - just finished mine. Only reason I will model it as Lion is because the ship
I was on at the time( the battle class)  was in company with Lion in the Med for quite a time and a I have a few photos of her
when we were alongside for a jackstay transfer.

Try Swan Hunter and Wigham Richarson at Walsend if they're still around they may have the as fitted from the 1942 build.I saw her in 1956 being fitted out in Chatham Dockyard. If they're not around you may get a redirect, try it you've nothing to loose.

Terry I could be wrong here but I believe when Lion came down to the Tyne to be finished in the 50s
they had to start by removing all the superstructure as there had been a complete re-design since the 40s
so the original plans would have been no good.
I managed with the some help from a Glaswegian model maker who is making Tiger  to get a set of plans from
the|Mitchell Library - good plans and at a very reasonable price. Just got to finish Leopard and I can get started.
Thanks anyway

Condorman, yes I have the Swiftsure hull as well - got the turrets  and p.e. frets from Cammetts and
the electrics and motors from Action and George Sitek did the four prop shafts and rudder so I am ready to
start when I have finished the present build.
