Recommendations please!
« on: May 03, 2011, 06:16:06 am »

So, what WWII naval films do people recommend? I've already seen: river plate, sink the bismark, u-571, x-craft, and run silent run deep, but can't think of any other films. Anyone?

And secondly, probably not really very popular on here but does anyone know of any good naval action/strategy games for pc/mac.

Thanks in advance.

as for U-571, yea americans winning the war for us, but they do at least acknowledge our minor efforts in the credits.

i did forget a couple of the other films i've seen, midway, and tora tora tora

they were expendable: who's in this? i seem to remember seeing a black and white film about pt boats in the pacific?

murphy's war: lol i read it at 1st as murphys law, was trying to think how james nesbitt playing an undercover cop was about WWII naval battles lol

Hello, I would go along with Martin with "Das Boot" but make sure you watch the FULL version, about three & a half hours long, you get the tedium & the knicker wetting along with the rest of the action. Nemesis

The SIlent Enemy.  The story of Buster Crabb's exploits in WWII with Lawrence Harvey as Buster Crabb.  And I suppose Dunkirk half qualifies as a naval film surely?

'Above Us The Waves' with John Mills, and I'll reccommend too 'Das Boot' or 'The Boat', Wolfgang Peterssen, brilliant. Going further back history wise, 'Mutiny On The Bounty', the original and the later one with Marlon Brando, and another later remake 'The Bounty' with Anthony Hopkins and Mel Gibson. Also enjoyed 'Master And Commander' with Russel Crowe. 'Men of Honour' with Robert De Niro and Cuba Gooding Jnr.  And for you film buffs, what connects Das Boot and Raiders of the Lost Ark?? Happy viewing, Dave.  :-))

Das Boot is considered to be the best submarine war film ever made, watch the full version and watch it in German with English sub titles, the dubbed version does lose something. When it was first aired on TV, yes it was a TV series first, I shared an office with a WWII ex submariner who was in fact sunk in the Med by depth charge and taken prisoner. He considered it the closest any filmaker has got to the real thing, but its still a long way from the real thing!

By the way this submariner I shared an office with took part in the Albert RN saga when he was a POW. Now there's another fim to get hold of 'Albert RN'.
