best/worst metal geared servos
« on: May 07, 2011, 10:01:12 pm »

If there is one piece of RC kit that makes sure your boat does exactly what you tell it to, its the rudder servo...
Recently, I had to replace my rock-solid Futaba S3305 servo.
As the Futaba is a bit pricey, I decided to try a cheaper hi-torque, metal-geared servo from a different manufacturer only to find significant play in the gearing. So, still looking for a bargain I bought another inexpensive servo from another manufacturer - same problem...
Why sell a hi-torque, metal-geared servo that allows the rudder to flap about!
Anyone had similar experience and/or got any recommendations?

I dare say your attempt now by buying 2 servo's would of equalled the price of the original Futaba one..............

Unfortunately quality does not often bond with a low price these days.

Sometimes the only way to help reduce the backlash is to use twin link rods to/from the servo horn to the rudder, rather than just using a single one.
Do you use single or twin on your setup?

Yup - mugged twice! :((
The boat has a direct, twin armed link from servo to rudder which had no play whatsoever with the Futaba servo....the 'wobble' is in the gears of the cheaper servos.
I was wondering a) are there are any budget servos that work as they should? and b) it might be of help if we exchanged info based on our experience of different makes/models.
It does seem that 'you get what you pay for', but there're always exceptions.

Have you tried Hobbyking? I've found their servos are excellent quality, and are inexpensive.

Anyone ........ got any recommendations?

I use Hitec servos http://hitecrcd.com/products/digital/digital-sport/index.html and like them a lot. I use a digital for steering although that is not absolutely necessary. The Sävox http://www.servoshop.co.uk/index.php?area=servo&make=Savox&title=Savox+Servos brand are used by some of the FSR-V crowd and have had good reviews.

I should have added that their is a wide variation between models. One of the best guides are the customer reviews which are at the bottom of each product on the HK website.

Another good page on the 'rcmodelreviews' site is this one-

http://www.rcmodelreviews.com/chineseservos1.shtml

There are good inexpensive servos and bad ones. I got some servos from HK which feature a digitally controlled amplifier, coreless motor, titanium gear set and a magnetic encoder instead of a potentiometer. They are the smoothest and most powerful sevos I have ever encountered, and cost under a score each.

link or model number for these mystical servos?

There are about five models of these servos available from HK. This link shows the top end version, which is super powerful and fast-

at the end of the day you get what you pay for ! i have tried cheapies mg995 etc etc etc the multiplex have been going 2 yrs with no problems ! the savox i have used for about a year even putting 2 in a heavly modified traxxas revo for steering where others have failed these are still up and running ! only had 1 fail due to partly my own fault but cml replaced it no problem

Thanks to you all for the advice - just taken delivery of a Power HD DS090M servo. There is a small amount of play in the gears but it is much faster than the other servos I have tried (including the Futaba S3305) and the torque is good. Tomorrow morning the boat will be back on Mote Park lake and I'll see how it works.
Having spent so much on all the other components, if the Power HD doesn't measure up I'll be buying a top-of-the-range Savox.

hi m8
no need to buy top of range savox ! the cheap n mid are really good checkout sc0251 there slightly larger than standard but have 16kg torque at 6v !!! i use two of these in a highly modded revo  ! they stand up to a lot of punishment. at £28 quid they dont break the bank !
