40 mm BOFORS
« on: May 01, 2006, 12:45:11 pm »

so here is another unfinished project. it will stand alone as it is 1/12 as i remember. the scale was decided around the size i could spin on my lathe. it was spun betwwen cenres using dogs. i had no taper on the tool, instead the chuck and motor rotated. how i never killed myself when it came out the centres.
it's built using the John Lambert plans. cost a fortune as i bought the lot.but i have no info on the inside of the gun aimers pod. so if any one can help, please do.

Hi there Colin

I dont know if this photograph is any good to you, but, you can just make out the inside of the gun aimer's pod.  This photo is of the 30mm gun, this one is on the HMS Leeds Castle - you can just make out some detail - dont know if its going to help you at all.

So are you going to make a carriage for it?

Then you can take it to model fly club displays....

.....see how many you can bring down ;D

I assume that this is the same model type as fitted to the "Ton" class sweepers and hunters? From memory Mk8?
I can remember that they had a reflector gunsight, foot pedals and a control column with handlebar type grips. There was an electrical mainswitch on the right hand side of the gunner (about level with his leg).
You could try having a look at one of the preserved ships or the inservice MCM's.
If it is of any help to you, I have drawings showing various views and details (1/48 scale) of the later Mk9 mount. May be able to furnish you with details.

Hi Ken,
Yr asking about 1:32 bofors. Dont know if it helps , Italeri are releasing 1:35 bofors. It is the army version but I'm sure it could be modified. Got to be easier than scratch building.. I know it took me three months. If its the same quality as the one on there recent 80' Elco it will good quality.

Hi Colin

Single Bofors, or 40/60 (40mm bore by 60 = barrel length) Type 7, oil powered, Type 8 Electric, battery powered, Type 9 Electric, main ship's power. Type 6 Gyro gunsight with two "flip" shades. In the pod, an adjustable (slightly!) seat, a main switch on the bulkhead for the electrical ones, a control joystick moving up/down, left/right, shaped somewhat like an inverted "V" with palm levers which when pressed down gave the aimer control of the mounting. Headset with microphone for the aimer, Gun Direction Officer's loudspeaker positioned close enough for aimer and loader to hear. Captain of the mounting varied over time between the aimer and the loader, third member of the team loaded the letter-box rack on the rear of the mounting as required, from ready-use lockers around the mounting. At one time I used to teach the crews, unfortunately over the years any diagrams etc have been lost. Hope this helps, at least a bit.

G'Day Collin,

Your model of the 40mm Bofor is incredible - I can't believe the detailed workmanship - absolutely Brilliant.

Can you please tell me what type of material you have used and possibly in what order would the gun have been built.
I need to build two at 1:16 scale and have no idea
Don't suppose I can commission you to build them for me or anyone else for that matter...

thanks

martin, thank you. built it a long time ago, when i had more patience than i have now.
the barrell was turned up on a small lathe that did not have a adjustable cross slide to give the angle. instreads the head stock could be rotated. so the barrel was held betwee centres and rotated on dogs. a somewhat dangerous excercise, and how the job never hit me when it flew out.
as for making another, soory no chance.
i used the John LAmbert plans. it was made out of aluminimum for the barrel and the loaders area. brass rectangular section for the carriage and plastic for just about everyhting else.
if you are really stuck then why not find a commercial item and rescale it to suit.
have fun

Thanks for the info Colin, as I stated before-you have done a great job and I can see something like your model will require large amounts of patience.
Not a bad idea to buy a commercial built - at least I will have a 3D version to look at during construction

Thanks again and much appreciated
