Author Topic: I have a boat in a cupboard and I wonder if it is worth spending some money on..  (Read 6731 times)

Hello,

I have in a cupboard a model boat which was bought for me when I was a lad.  It has only been in the water twice when it was fitted with what I seem to recall was a Taycol electric motor.  Being very lack lustre in performance, I bought an Enya engine but I could never get it started and I kind of lost interest in the boat in favour of cars as I got old enough to drive.  The Waltron rc unit was never installed in the boat.

My question, if any of you guys wouldn't mind answering, is, should I get the old girl out of the cupboard and have another go at the engine, or should I change the engine for another electric motor and see if I can't finally get the boat to a finished stage?

I have no idea whatsoever of what kind of motor or battery might give a reasonable performance and what the cost of some kit would be.  The engine is seized but I guess that with a little work it could be salvaged if this were a better bet.

The boat is a Wave Princess and it was bought around 1971 and assembled shortly after purchase.  The last time it saw water must have been around 1980!

Is there much interest in old models like this or should I guy a new model and start all over again?

Thanks

Hi Jab,

Mine has a cdouble cabin arrangement - bit like a fly bridge behind the covered front part - I am sure it is a Wave Princess though - maybe the one in the picture is one of the sister boats from the Norstar range?

Hi Shipmate,

Is it possible to get a decent turn of speed with an electric motor?  I have no idea where to start in terms of knowing which motor or battery to buy. More research is needed I think,,,,,,,,,,,,

With a decent brushless set up it can be FASTER than the Enya.
There should be lots of advice for what motor/ESC to use and Giantcod sell them at really cheap prices.

That is a very interesting site Bob, and a motor is not really expensive at all much to my surprise.......

I suspect the picture is the Waverider although I stand to be corrected on that, I can't find any other info at the moment...

It has to be worth considering restoring the boat, some of the other gear may not be useable but still don't let anything go...there are collectors who may want any of what you have there...might even include me...

I've just bought an Enya off Ebay, it was a very reasonable price, I'll have to wait and see what I've bought... :D

Photo's would be really useful...

I'll get some photos of the boat - having had it for so long it would be nice to have a bit of fun out of it although I am sure there are a few bits and bobs need doing to bring it up to scratch.  I think that replacing the engine might be a good idea , I seem to get the feeling that you can't use them in many places these days.........

Not many places will allow I.C. engines these days, I have a lake I can use not far away, you need to go electric really, would be easier all round...

back later..I have a boat kit on ebay...ends in 5 minutes...I'm sweating for a decent price... %%

Well here are a couple of pictures, some repair to the rear cabin/flybridge is needed, I have the broken parts to it should be possible to put these back together.  The engine is seized, it is an Enya 45 3B.  The radio control ewuipment is a 2 channel Waltron system from the late 70's, this is still in the orignal box!

Looks a nice old boat, well worth saving

It will very likely be worthwhile treating it to a new radio, as well.  One from the '70's, even if it appears to work, will probably cause all manner of upset to others.  The spec. requirements have changed over the years.

Ian
that Wave Princess is definately worth saving, i ran one back in the seventies and it was a very quick boat for its day. i would go electric as there are only a very limited number of lakes that allow I.C. engines to run.

also have a look over on the fireboat website http://modelfireboats.com/   its a site dedicated to Aerokits fireboats and all other models of that period there are videos and power set up tables etc. to give you some ideas for your boat.

Nice, I'm thinking about the Enya...would you be prepared to sell it ?
I'm speculating at the moment as I've only just seen it today (Sun 22 May)

I'll go and have a wander around and read about motors so that I'm a bit better informed.  I need to fix some of the superstructure and the varnish on the deck which is original has yellowed so that needs sorting out.  John, the engine is seized although it has never ever been started!  Once I have it out of the boat and decide how the boat is to be powered I'll let you know if I want to sell the Enya.

Ian that's fine...I don't want to put any pressure on you to sell the Enya, I bought 1 last week off Ebay, you could consider selling it that way, if you want info you can always ask me...I don't know everthing but I've run 2 Enya's in aircraft + many other glow's.

Here's a photo of my Enya 35, it will still be vewable on Ebay so you can see the price.

I'm being dragged off to the garden centre soon...its blowing a gale and lashing with rain...wife might call it off yet...!

Probably just gummed up with old oil.  A dose of WD would most likely cure it.

Just freed up a cyclemaster engine which wouldn't turn over after standing for a few years.
WD down the plug hole, left for a few hours, then light pressure on the flywheel. Result  :-))

Thinking about a seized glow engine...if it hasn't been run at all... are you sure first ?  it is probably rust on the piston/liner/crank, an engine that has been used with castor fuel will leave some goo which hardens over time, the cure for this is to soak in very hot water for a few minutes or so and then try to dismantle carefully) don't try to turn the engine over at all as this could damage the moving parts.

The WD method...or 'Plus Gas', which is a dismantling fluid, see photo...will release the rust which must be cleaned out and all the parts checked for damage...

Actually, diesel was my first thought, I always used to use it to clean my motorbike chain and it worked wonders on partially seized links, probably because it has greater lubricity than petrol or some other solvents.  Of course, it is also slightly more practical to get a couple of litres in which to soak something than, say, WD40  :-)
