Black Flying Scotsman locomotive.
« on: May 27, 2011, 07:39:25 pm »

What a terrible decision to paint the most famous railway engine in the world black >:-o. I hope it reverts to LNER apple green very soon. Is this a WWII nostalgia trip, is there a wartime film about to be made ?    Must look at some of the rail forums about this.

I heard this was simply for it's first season after it's overhaul the past couple of years, then it's reverting to it's trad' green livery.

It was on BBC News this evening.  It looked so drab, sad would be better word.   Must be a 3d remake of the "Thirty Nine Steps" in the offing  %)

She is only in the wartime black livery for her steaming/boiler testing to give the enthusiasts a look at how she used to look at a different point in her career. When she goes into full service she will be back in her Apple Green livery. :-))

I think pop music mogul  Pete Waterman (that used to own her) got death threats when he painted her the "wrong shade of green" after spending hoooooooge amounts of his own money restoring her back in the late seventies/early eighty's..

well thats what he said on one of those Discovery channel documentary's

Arrow5 you were right with APPLE GREEN. This is the proper LNER shade of green that everyone knows and is the most popular. But is is also good to show her off in the colours she has worn in her life every now and then. Everyone hated the British Railways green that Pete Waterman applied but it was authentic.

Here are some photos for Flying Scotsman fans, which I took on a wet March day back in 1989, when she was visiting Australia. You will note that Health and Safety was not a big issue in those days :o

It seems to be incorrectly painted then, as it is in BR locomotive green, but with LNER lettering and numbers. I thought that it should have worn Apple Green with this style of lettering. Am I right?

The other 2 shots I took in the NRM at York in 2008, when she was stripped down for maintenance and repair.

Peter.

PS. The other loco with Scotsman is a streamlined NSW Railways Class C38, 3801.

In case anyone's interested, here is a better photo of 3801 I took at Broadmeadow station, Newcastle NSW, in October 1988. It was at the head of the Bicentennial Train during the celebrations associated with 200 years of European settlement in Australia.

Hi Peter. That is Apple green mate, its always darker than you think it should be. However It does depend on whether its in Darlington green or Doncaster green.

Fair enough, Ali. It was a wet day too, which probably affected how the colour appeared. Also, the photos were taken 22 years ago on film, and I have since scanned them onto the computer, all of which may have had some effect.
