Decoy Duck
« on: March 01, 2007, 09:17:41 pm »

I have just bought two plastic ducks and plan to fit R/C.

Has anyone else built one ?  What are the pitfalls  ?

I did one years ago and it was a bit nose heavy, also the base of it was a bit flexi, could have done with ply insert to stiffen it up, Andy M.

Thanks for that Andy.

Don't know when I'll get around to it, but it looks fun

                    Fantastic.

Had a look around these sites.  Perhaps I could start   Model Duck Mayhem.    Only Joking Martin.

I originally thought of a larger water fowl but couldn't find any 'carcasses' big enough.  These ducks are only 12 inches long, so miniature electronics seems to be the way.

Will keep you all informed.

Tug Kenny,

Here in France (where hunting is very, very popular) you can buy all kinds of decoys, life size ducks, pigeons etc. The largest I have seen is a Canada Goose. Some of them seem a little flimsy and would need bracing. They appear to be made of a rubbery, plastic stuff (hope that's not too technical for some of you chaps!).

Try the Internet for suppliers of hunting equipment.

If you want me to find out sizes and prices I could possibly buy you one and send it as they cannot be heavy.

Hi Roger

I have assumed that plastic was the way to go, as gluing and construction will be needed. For this reason I chose these which arrived this morning. The older versions were made with rubber, so this would not be easy to stick back together watertight.

I would be interested in some Pics of anything you see, but I'll try these first and see how I get on. (I've got two in case i ruin one  ;) )

I was enthused by Rick's pictures and didn't realize there was a market for them.  It should be a challenge eh !!

Kenny?

Are you going to articulate the head and bill? Does JJC do a sound module?

I have one that I fitted with 40MHz RC, speed controller,a 380 motor and a prop of about 25mm .   It also has a JJC duck sound unit and small speaker.   It goes like the clappers so I have loaded it by making it pull three smaller ducklings, (The bath type).   Pete M

I have built the decoy duck, did not have any problems and even had a short sighted old lady throw bread at it when sailing at the local country park. Also built a decoy goose which I purchase in France, they are cheaper over there in the big Decathlon stores. We have a seagull in the club and also a couple of swans, one of these was sunk though by the real thing which was not happy with it on the lake

If your decoy was fitted with a conventional shaft and prop the mind boggles!

Many years ago I had a duck and a goose, the duck was the same as yours i found that
when I put the duck in the water it sat low in the water so I ended up gluing foam to the
underside to give it a wee bit extra buoyancy. I will try and see if I can find some pictures of
the duck and the goose an will post for you to see

Thank you for the info Colin.  The low 'freeboardl'  (is that the word?)  is obviously a problem.  These ducks also have an empty hollow box below them, dragging them down.

oooh that's nice, Portside.

Did you ballast the under section, as mine is hollow.?  I was thinking of a steerable Kort's nozzle, so as to do away with the rudder. What do you think?

no i did'nt do anything to the tube as this fills up with water and acts as a keel .the korts sound nice but with the keel it may be complicated to fit i only cut the smallest amount from the top and this makes access limited  i was though thinking of fitting a small motor in the keel and then you could fit a kort but you may have problems with heat ,swings and roundabouts.

I made the rudder on mine from clear perspex so that it could not be seen. To ballast the duck I made the battery pack up with 3 c cells on each side. As portside 2 I also left the tube underneath to fill with water. I also fed the receiver aeriel out of a small hole I made in the bill, it looked like the duck was eating something.

You too!

I had a mounting board glued in but as soon as it flexed - glue released. I have something called J-B Weld that I'm going to try. Not sure what other names it sells under but I found it in a typical auto parts store. It was referred to in another forum. Just haven't had time to try it.
