just out of interest are the nuclear type subs quicker than the U-boat types? . I know they tend to have more power but also more weight i'd of thought. just wondered as in the future if there was a team race for instance which would win.

er yes... they are a lot faster. WWI subs were really slow under water. They needed to be on the surface to get anywhere. Submersible boats rather than submarines. Saying that the WWI R class wasnt surpased under water till the XXI came along at the end of the war.

If you are referring to model subs (ww2 vs nuke), then I'm sure you could rig a ww2 sub to run fast. From a drag perspective, though, ww2 will never be as slick as a nuke. If your sub races specified max motor size, then the slicker nuke hull would beat the draggy ww2 hull. btw, one of the reasons real nukes are faster is that they run deeper than the ww2 subs. Deeper water=higher pressure=> less cavitation of the prop.

Ah ok, model subs. yes nuclear type subs will be faster given the same size and mptor/drive system due to their streamlined shape.

It depends on the subject you are modelling. Boats like the Walther u-boats and subjects like Delfin are more than a match for modern day nukes in the performance department in model form. These were all WWII.

Also very early boats like Holland class and other pioneering designs had efficient (fish like) hull shapes, but lacked the sheer grunt of nuclear power plants.
