RC Bath Duck/Budget Fun Build
« on: June 08, 2011, 06:27:37 pm »

1st would 1 of the nice mods please move this to the appropriate section as i wasn't sure where to post this.

Well I decided to build something for my GF to use when she takes me to the lake. As she loves flying around in her cesna or whatever it is i thought a surface running plane would be good (was thinking of a catalina) however she decided that she'd like a radio controlled rubber bath duck. Thought I'd do it as a list incase anyone wants to do similar (though I doubt it)
quick list of things needed/tools:
1 giant duck £16
1 rudder £3
2 motor pods from baby severn
mtroniks viper esc
giant cod 4 channel 2.4 ghz radio gear

hot glue gun
pack of cheap craft knives from hobbycraft
small file
So 1st was a trip to buy hawkins bazaar to buy a giant bath duck:

then to cut the back off:

as propulsion I'm using some motor pods from a baby severn (thanks ayrshire andy, who also supplied the esc) i got a rudder online, meaning i only needed to cut 3 holes in the bottom
I fitted the motors, surrounding the holes on both side with glue using the hot glue gun. When i put the shaft for the rudder in the thread didn't go down far enough so i needed to make a spacer. Being on a tight budget of around £0 i used an old bottle lid with a hole cut in it, put it over the rudder shaft and glued down using the hot glue gun again. Still wasn't quit enough so I cut a couple of 'washers' out of more bottle tops.

stuck in the bath for a quick test of the motors, and apart from running into the sides alot, it works ok, now i just need to fit the servo and decide how to fix the cover back on!

There not much to look at, not very difficult, but my 1st attempt at rc'ing something rather than buying other peoples models.

i expect criticism, so fire away.

Looking good sir, when are you going into mass production! PS how much these days for the 2.4Ghz gear? Am thinking of treating myself to 2.4 for my next modification...ah the joys of new tech!

Keep them ideas and pics coming,

Andy

Cheapest full combo set is around £25 - http://www.modelboatmayhem.co.uk/forum/index.php?topic=27616.0 refers.

The servos from Giant Cod are around £2, making them a really cheap way of powering fun boats, etc...

Thanks geezer for the tip-off and review par excellence, have just perused the Cod link and it has a current rating of 4.74 out of 5 and price indeed of £25.16, am doing a twin brushless prop conversion on my daughter's prized baby Severn soon, so the spending fingers are getting itchy!

Cheers,

Andy

Giant Cod are by far the cheapest, but you do have to look out for build quality on the T4U (you pays your money....!). Luckily, the basic components are usually good (and you can, of course, always get them sorted if they aren't - GC are good people to work with).

What has been reported (though not often) are things like scrappy internal soldering of wires to pots. I believe that this was an issue on earlier systems, and things have improved now. But if they haven't, it is very easy to check and if necessary improve this yourself.

GC's aim is to import direct from China and sell at rock-bottom prices. That means they have no margin for extra customer service. If they make a mistake, or the goods are faulty, they sort the problem immediately and take the hit - if you make a mistake, don't go crying to them! That means they are more suitable for supplying an experienced modeller who knows what he wants, rather than a beginner who needs a lot of support. That's what the GC Forum is for. It's well worth scanning their whole site for all sorts of cheap goodies - spare T4U receivers, for instance, are sufficiently cheap to have one per boat permanently built in.

Lol I doubt there's that many people who'd want a huge bright yellow duck!

With the 2.4 set it's around £25 but by the time you put postage on it's closer to £30.

True about the postage, makes a man tempted to chuck in a few servos, bits and bobs etc to flesh out his order and reduce the percentage spent on the post...hide my Switch card Mrs Ayrshire Andy!

There is one on You Tube with a brushless motor installed. It's really quite amusing, the antics it can do.  I'm sorry but I don't know the posting address but it was told about on here.

Lol I was thinkin of doing a jet powered 1, was unsure of how stable it would be though, and got a huge backlog of other projects. Another project I was going to do is a duck from a garden centre, 1 of the life like 1's, and fit it to a speedboat hull, but so all the is visible above he waterline is the duck then have a powerful motor in it, a powerduck!

Brilliant idea! How about a forum race at the wicksteed mayhem next year? keep the rules simple, electric power only but no limits on size of motor/type of drive. A circuit race, and a straight line drag race.

I'm being serious so if anyones interested ill see if i can try and talk to the relevant people and sort something.....

Essex...STREWTH! I can imagine everyone's amazement as it planes then takes off...Bikerdude, could be a cracking fun one design class, would anyone want or could anyone provide a pair of mouldings based on a traditional duck body upper and a planing hull lower to be fitted out with whatever racers fancy, it could be done I am sure for say £39 for a nice 18" - 27" long ABS hull and upper body with £5 going to the RNLI, or do we stick with the bath ducks out there as a basis despite their limited displacement...either way it would be a fun event and possibly even a fundraiser for a great Institution?

Tbh for the fun factor I think the giant bath ducks would be better and probably get a better public/family reaction, what a sight a dozen bath ducks would be.  And I think the difficulty of the stability and room inside would be a good test of peoples skills.

I'll start a separate poll thread to see if there's the interest.
