Do you want to paint them with colour or to lacquer them with clear coat to keep the original brass finish?
If painting with colour, a base primer coat then top coat of colour of any brand, enamels or acrylics will do in any finish,(matt, satin, gloss) then a clear coat.
If just wanting a clear coat on the brass then any an enamel clear coat (01 from revel) is very good, gloss, satin and matt finishes are available.
All can be used with a paint brush.
But you can't beat spraying on smaller items such as stanchions if done right, paint tends to go on to thick at times and can make a nice looking rail look like its had 100 years of paint!
Or you can leave them as is.. and once they start to get dirty use a dremel and its buffing head, some rubbing compound and just buff them back out to that shine.
