Help Required. What Ship is this from ?????
« on: June 10, 2011, 05:31:19 PM »

Someone has given me the pictured plaque.  I am told it is from a Royal Navy Vessel and is around 40 years old.  It measures around 6" x 5" and is of cast brass weighing 1.5kgs.  It has the word 'Veteran' on the rear amd at one time has had three brass fixing bolts.
Can any of you grey-ship chappies give me any clue as to the identity of the ship it was from?
Many Thanks. Harry.

Possibly not a ships plaque , going by the type of head it could be from a shore establishment , HMS Raleigh maybe ??

If I remember correctly HMS Raleigh has a stag in the centre of its crest.

No Drake is a red griffon/dragon.  Assuming it is a crest, and most have the name above even air squadrons, the only thing that srpings to mind are HMT Conquistador and HMS Spaniard.

You must have finished just before me, Pugwash - but I missed it! The shape indicated that it was a destroyer, that was before they standardised on a round design in 1940.

Thanks Pugwash. I have looked at the website and the figure on the plaque is the same but facing the wrong way and theres no crown on the top of mine.   Could this be from one of the earlier HMS Veterans and where do I find the info?
Many Thanks once again - You are a star !   Cheers. H.

I have sen several plaques like yours and they all have the same shape etc, they where all pre war and early war destroyers. I saw them at the Sea Cadets office at the Ex HMS Dolhin Gosport and theirs are the original moulds.

I forgot to say that plaques from old small ships like yours are rarer than those from the likes of big battle wagons etc, so are more valuable to collectors.

But why is the  figure facing the wrong way and the background colour different to the logged crest? Eldest makes miniatures of the navel crests and his reference book shows the figure facing left on a green ground as the link.
