I bought 1 of the ducks, decided on how to power it/what prop rudder system etc, but I'm still unsure as to how I'm going to cut it open. Bit stuck for parts at the moment.

Just curious, if Steamboat Phil is going to 'steam power' his duck, is he going to call it 'The Mallard' :} :}.

I am just considering all the names possible, if I can get my grubby little hands on a duck I'm thinking of fitting him with a fake jet exhaust with suitable burn marks and calling him a 'Crispy duck'. %%

Got a couple of Graupner speed 600 motors spare that I'm tempted to put in but I got a feeling they might be a bit too much lol

Keep having new ideas and deciding that's definitely how I'll do it then think of a different way again! Can I enter a fleet of ducks?

Well I've made a start on my duck. Anyone making one needs to be careful there are no cracks in the underside, see pic 3. These weren't visible from the outside but only apparent when cut open. This is why I had to cut the bottom out completely and replace it with a styrene section. Still not thought of a name yet... More to come soon, Dave.  :-))

Right firstly, sorry for the slow reply, no sleep in 36 hours meant just about managed to send 1 pm yesterday morning then fell asleep until 20 mins before work last night. So...

Some basic rules, I want it to be as simple as possible, and a laugh rather than a serious race so the rules are (I feel) very slack.

1: electric only but no restrictions on size of motor/s, batteries, prop, water jet. But please remember this is a fun thing not a serious race.
2: no major mods to the hull, ie no mounting the duck on a powerboat hull. Restricted to the fitting of a keel or some small fins to help keep it straight. I was personally thinking of a longish keel with a fishing weight on the bottom, but that's your decision. This means flat bottom hulls, with the addition of keels are acceptable, NO MOUNTING ON ANOTHER TYPE OF HULL!
3: each duck will need to be easily identifiable whilst on the lake, so a custom flag needs to be flown from the top of the ducks head, if you want something specific, pm me with a description or picture and I'll make a list.
4: the duck needs to be either the 1 from Hawkins bazaar or 1 the same though I don't know who else sells them.

I think those 4 rules should essentially cover the basics, if I've overlooked some glaringly obvious decisions please let me know.

The winner will get a 'prize' but don't get excited, I can guarantee it will be cheap and tacky, to match the 'vessels' taking part!

As for names, if anyone wants to reserve a name thats fine, just add it to the thread and I'll make a list.
I'd like to reserve 'queen quacker' for myself and 'duckzilla' for my gf.

Not sure of the course, only been to the boating lake at wicksteed for about 5 mins last Saturday, there were some cones in the water, maybe a race around these? But it will be around corners aswell as straights so you'll need to try and get it to turn ok.

(another long night at work last night so please forgive any typos or omissions.)

The above post is not aimed at 'number 6' or Colin, both of which are perfect examples of how to do them.

Number6 how did you cut your duck so neatly?

Used a very sharp new titanium coated stanley knife blade, was a bit nerve wracking to say the least.  :o  Followed the curves of the wings and other lines marked out with fine masking tape. It's not the easiest thing to cut open and there are a few rough edges but it'll be ok.
As for game dealer, well I have butchered a few models in my time I guess.  :P
More to come soon, Dave.  :-))

Wow, i used 3 new very sharp modelling knives, the duck blunted them all and its really not cut well. It was easier after pouring boiling water over the duck to soften it up, but clearly you have a steadier than me!

I never thought of softening it up with hot water, good idea that. I decided to swap the end the Schottel drive is located as it may be better pulling it thorough the water than trying to push it along, we'll see how it goes. There will be a detachable keel too that I can put a weight on if a bit unstable (the duck not me). I'll be doing some trials soon, so that should be intersting!
Has anyone found a good paint for them? I've used Halfords primer on the 'bottom' of mine for now, seems to stick well and hasn't cracked.
I'm thinking of black/white dazzle camouflage finish, 'Dazzle Duck' maybe? More to come soon, Dave.  :-))

Well, I took delivery of a parcel from 'cornwall model boats' (excellent service, had an email about my order, immediately followed by another apologising for spelling my name wrong!) so now I have (almost) all the bits to do 2 ducks, 1 running twin 385's with twin rudders and 3 blade 25mm props, and the other with a graupner hydro propulsion unit, with a hydro prop and a graupner speed 500 race motor.

Hopefully they'll work, otherwise I've just wasted my next 2 months modelling budget....

I've actually managed to get round to doing something today as my brief bout of 'man flu' has gone. Got Dazzle Duck primed and base coat of white on. I then spent around 2 hours masking the stripes on it (thanks Russ for the masking tape). I just got it done in time for the heavens to open.  >:-o
Hope it's nice tomorrow and I'll get the black paint on. Could do with a nice hat to put on it... Dave.  :-))
