Duck race at Wicksteed 2012?
« on: June 22, 2011, 07:04:23 pm »

So from my bath duck thread, I'm wondering if there'd be any interest to start a fun racing league at the next Mayhem Wicksteed?

http://www.modelboatmayhem.co.uk/forum/index.php?topic=30857.msg304799#msg304799

I'm provisionally thinking, limiting the basics to the giant bath duck as bought from Hawkins bazaar, allow minor mods to the 'hull' shape, nothing too major, and limit it to electric only but not restrict the size of motors/voltage/prop/jet.

Very vague just now, just want to see if it's worth considering or not. Thought it might give the public and families a bit if a laugh and show it's not all about professional quality scale models.

It would be a laugh if you restricted the colour to the standard yellow {-)

Lol although standard would be a laugh it would pose a huge problem, but we could restrict it to bright colour schemes only!

A few ideas suggested by a fellow mayhemer (though he is from the north... Lol)

It's grim oop north tha knows...how about each duck being issued with a 3 (4?!) digit race number, or the builder designing their own battle flag to a standard size, which can be flown from a pennant say 3 or 4 feet above the water and aid identification amidst the mayhem...there will be mayhem won't there?!

So it could be duck egg blue or mallard green with a nice boat tail, powered by eider twin paddles or a nice brushless with a feathered prop! Or even a submersible duck with just its head sticking out of the water - that's Peking duck  ;)

Sorry, just plucked those out of the air .....

Sadly I never made it to Wicky this year due to financial difficulties (skint), but I wondered, how many of you did make it along or would like to take part in the Great Wicky Duck Sailing/Racing Champs 2012? Even a glacially slow builder like moi might manage...if I start soon...and work really hard...

Used a hot glue gun in mine.

Martin is it ok for next year?

Suggest not starting til some rules are decided, are we using a standard duck with powerplant of our choice (electric as no ic at wicksteed) or do we allow hull mods?

I'll pm Martin tomorrow, gotta get to work now.

Judge? I'm thinking 2 or 3 laps round the lake, 1st past the post wins, I'll be busy racing! Lol

Those who voted yes and maybe can you make yourselves known, then I can let you know what's happening. Plenty of time to be making and fine tuning those ducks!

How about a a small steering element in the race, eg. in or around a couple of buoys so it's not just a
duck(club)-500 race where 'he who has the most powerful motor' wins!

just my 10p's worth.... Rules...

for our Club500 all the motors are in a bag.... and on the day of the race, everyone picks a motor out of the bag... that way no one has time to tamper with the motors and if they do, they might not get the same motor at the next race...

that would solve the motor problem..!!  :-))  :-))

which your just left with the speed controller and Batteries/accumulator (lipo or Sub C nicad cells)

some speed controllers don't give the full wack of power to the motor...!!
some batteries are better than others...!!

You're all quackers!

Sounds like fun. I'd say speed 400 (or brushless equivalent) on 2s lipo would be more than sufficient power wise. 2.4ghz radio would enable lots of entants without worries about frequency clash. It would be best to make this a stock class, with everything the same for all models.

My only concern would be stability, as the duck is almost as high as it is long. Do they need a keel, or a bit of lead in the belly to make them stay upright? Anyone with experience of R/Cing these care to comment?

You would have to start the race with a duck call!
