Other Models From Tynemouth
« on: March 04, 2007, 04:30:03 pm »

The next few pictures show other models built by members of Tynemouth Model Boat Club (TMBC). They are all scratch built although I could (reluctantly) put on some of the many "kit" boats if there is a demand. The photos are not presented with any build details except for the builder and in some cases the approx. length of the model. Any further details required I will have to get from the builder. Shy souls as they are.
The 1st one is "Breadalbane" by Sandy Thompson. He specialises in Clyde Steamers, so if you see another one you can assume it's one of Sandys. Bryan.Y.

Bryan, you need to open your mind to kits.  Not everyone has all the time in the world to make thier models, like me for example!!  I appreciate scratchbuild as much as anything else but kits have thier part in the hobby.  They keep a great number of us involved who may otherwise not bother and who may go on to scratchbuild something later on.  There again they might not.

I'd rather see a pond full of youngsters with plastic ready to sail boats than an empty pond on a Sunday.  We need to encourage all and any form of participation and not try intimidate people and ultimately put them off.

People are just as rightly proud of thier kit boats and have every right for them to be seen as equal by us all.

Please post your pictures of kit boats, and try to be nice about them!! ;) ;) ;)

I have built from kits and I have scratch built models and I personally can't see the difference between the two, after all when you scratch build you just make the kit first and then you build it. I have seen many well built kits and some scratch built models not so well built and vice versa. I have said my piece and I will go quietly back to my building board harbouring HMS hood ( scratch built!!) and sailing my Model slipway Maggie M

Hi Slapbass, I'm building Maggie M at the moment and am interested to know how you built the rails. I have a notion to assemble them on a template I've made of the deck.
The idea of joining sections of wire at the stanchion holes worries me a bit and I reckon bending longer lengths using the template, threading on the stanchions and then glueing might be a better idea.

Bryan you put these photos of your wonderful models on this forum, and then you try to put down people like myself who build from kits. What exactlly is wrong with you .
It is because of people like you that this hobby is dying out. how can we expect to get more youngsters interested in this hobby if people like you are going to put them down for building kits.
Also most of us have other things to do in our lives other than scratch building fleets of models

hi douglas i tried both ways and found it was a better result using longer lengths of wire bending the wire roughly to shape on the template i made and fine tuning them on the model before fixing permanently bit more fiddly but much better reselt. hope this helps.

Who said I have something against kits. It's a lie I tell you! A lie!. As  with everything some are excellent and some "not so".
I also acknowledge that not everyone has the space, time, knowledge and everything else needed to build from scratch. They ARE an excellent introduction to the "hobby", but..for me, building a kit would be building someone elses model. Also, much as I appreciate the efforts of some kit builders I do encourage some of them to try scratch building. This gentle coaxing has actually got one of our 12 year old junior members to attempt scratch building a tug (with minimum input from his dad). End of subject. BY

Not yet posted but Willy Carpenter (TMBC) has a supeb Maggie M . Willy is a detail fanatic. Even moulds his own name onto the rubber tyre fenders and has been known to mould rubber model wellies! He is'nt on the "net" but I could put you in touch with him.
I'll try and lift the photos up the list a bit before you make up your mind. BY.

My husband Lawrie, with over 45 years modelling experience, always says that it is harder to build from kits than it is to scratch build  !!

With kits, you have to follow instructions and do "as you are told" whereas with scratch building, you do what you like ...   ;D

You have a short memory Bryan it was you that said ,and I quote "people who build kits should get a life" and that was just after you joined this forum and you put a lot of backs up right from the start. Its a shame you have this attitude as judging from your models you could have alot to offer instead of  just wanting to be the centre of attraction.
Also YOU DONT NEED TO SHOUT we are not deaf.

I was ignoring and trying to keep out of the arguments that had sprung up, but I now need to say something.

I always tended to sail alone away from  clubs because of the attitude of a few elitist modellers. I went to Ellesmere on one occasion only and was dismayed by the attitude of certain scale modellers. Thanks to a friend I got roped in to running the boat section at a different model show, and was gobsmacked by the attitude of members of one club. After that first year I set out to make it a fun place to sail and made sure that every class of sailor got there chance and that no one was left out. I even asked people for feedback after my first year. Biggest complaint I received was the elitist attitude of certain people.

There are a lot of good people out there so lets just get on with enjoying our hobby that we have in common. My models weren't great because I made a lot of mistakes but I enjoy sailing and if a kid comes along I let him have a go. I got into model boating because when I was about 14 I saw this bloke sailing an airboat on the local playing fields that had flooded. I asked him about it and he let me have a go, after that I was hooked. Years later I befriended a modeller who I had met and it turned out it was that same guy that let me have a go with the airboat. We sailed together for a number of years until I upped sticks and moved to the lake district. This guy taught me the hobby was all about having fun building and sailing and he is right.

When I first signed on to this forum  I thought it was a friendly place and i have had a lot of help from my fellow modellers, but the last two weeks have me wondering about just how friendly it is.

I too have sat on the fence long enough, and I have to confirm what DickyD says - BY did condemn kit builders and those who build from boxes telling them to get a life.    Its very sad when someone comes along and tries to dictate what he feels is right for everyone.

Hi John,

I know he did, I read it too and was not amused (polite version ;D). I build kits, I also scratchbuild and am now trying semi kits and have got two to do. I started out modelmaking with Airfix and Matchbox kits as a little 'un, progressed to Tamiya as a teenager and now I build working models.

BTW Dicky D I need to clarify that I wasn't attacking you for speaking out.

Take my word for it Clive this is a very friendly forum. I have made many new friends on here and received much useful  advice.
But you must realize it only takes one bad apple etc.
Stick with it.
By the way Tynemouth club is not as elitist as the impression BY's postings give. In fact I have had quite a lot of e-mails from their members disassociating themselves from his remarks.

I think that B.Y is a wonderfull modeller, and obviously very skilled, unfortunately I also get the impression of him being a bit eletist with his attitude, I for one have never joined a club because of that, I have been to quite a few and looked around, and asked the usual questions that a novice would ask, sometimes the replies were encouraging, more often than not they were,nt. I asked a question on the forum one time about what I though was Swansea Model Boat Show, with three replies two telling me that it had been moved to Bridgend all fair enough, and
one in no uncertain terms saying that it was,nt Swansea Model Boat Show it was In fact The South Wales Model Show, !!! the same guy on another thread (what do you look like), sent in his photo on a J.Peg  entitled at the bottom Swansea Model Show !!!,  my point is,, it makes no difference wether you scratch build , or kit build, its all about having a  not so good attitude to others, and there lack of experience or skills, sadly I think that is what puts a lot of people  young and old from taking up this hobby of ours. One last thing while going around these shows and admiring" all" the models, I, and I am sure others, find it a bit daunting to ask (silly ) questions from  experienced modellers who are all sat together behind their club stands, resulting in the novice having to find his own way around certain problems they may be finding in their model. I know that most of them would help at a drop of a hat, but once bitten by attitude, you tend not to go back.
Sorry for being so long winded about this.

Bosun, may I offer you some consolation about asking questions at shows?
I attended the South Wales show when it was held in Cardiff (a couple of years back?). Yes, there were some builders sitting behind their stands watching the world go by with, at times, an air of studied indifference. There was however a display by a club (Magran? - sorry if the name is wrong) with a different attitude. I was looking at a rather imposing tug and was sure that something about it was familiar. One of the club members came over and started talking about it. Beter than that, when he realised that I was interested in it, he proceded to take it apart for me to see the internal layout. Helpful, friendly and very informative. A great example of what a club member should be. I'm sorry that I didn't get the gentlemans name but no doubt if one of the club members reads this, the tug was based on the Moorcock hull (I was unaware at that time that this hull was available). Well done Sir!
At the same venue there was a display of "the matchbox navy". If you ever get the chance to see this display (done for charity) take it. Not just for the quality of the workmanship but also for the sheer enthusiasim of the builder. He cheerfully explained all the details and methods used. Mind blowing in my opinion. Considering that he must have been asked the same questions millions of times, he responded with the utmost politeness and detail that I have ever witnessed. A true enthuiast of his hobby and a credit to the concept of being willing to discuss and pass on gems of information.
My partner had never been to a model show before but she was completely impressed by the attitude of these people - and that is, believe me, a major achievement. She can detect waffle and B******t at many miles range.
In some respects I can sympathise with your attitude towards clubs having been involved on the fringes of a couple. I don't particularly like some of the attitudes or behind the back comments that exist in some places. You have to remember or accept that any club represents a cross section of human nature, some good and some...... I hasten to add that I am not a club member!
Just a point of view, praise where it is deserved etc.

I tend to agree with Bosun (I can actually recall seeing your question and replies around the time of posting and thought at the time that the reply you got was rather off-putting in tone).
I see a club that meets on a Sunday at my local lake and not being shy I've approached several memers to ask questions but the majority dont seem the freindliest bunch. I've even swelled the coffers by buying cakes, cups of tea and raffle tickets at their annual 'open day' but I for one am not interested in joining. It's a great pity as I'm really interested in the hobby and have 4 kits (yes kits!) awaiting my due care and attention and have comissioned a further professional build. If the attitude of some club members were to be a little less standoffish I'd join up but for now and when my comission is complete I'll be resigned to sailing alone. Shame really.
