balsa to seal or not to seal ?
« on: July 14, 2011, 12:32:57 am »

Hello folks
I have just completed my first ever carving of a ships boat from laminated balsa at 1/32nd scale and it looks quite good, well in my eyes anyway!!!, this is to go on to a steam drifter called the "Fifie" which is my first real build, I would be grateful if any fellow member can advise me on whether to seal the balsa ships boat with sanding sealer or similar before attempting to plank it carvel style, if that is appropriate for this type of ships boat. Also I have read of some modellers using card to simulate planks in this instance, any advice on how to do the actual planking whether using card or thin strip wood for the planking from more experienced members would be appreciated, and also what glue to use.
Thanks in advance, John.

I would seal it afterwards.

Reason, you will have to sand it all down again, and then re-seal it.

Always be aware that with Cellulose Sanding sealer paints other than Cellulose have a nasty habit of coming off it, especially if you are masking.  The filler within it seems to act as a good release agent,  many people I know over the years have fallen fowl of this.

Cheers
