My new build ''Fairmile A ML104''
« on: May 10, 2011, 10:54:19 am »

Hi Mike and everybody else, This is my first visit and attempt at building a model boat, so please be gentle with me. ( I do work as a builder full time) So here goes, I would like to build a model of the boat my father did quite a lot of his 2nd world war service on. I have the plans from Mr Lambert but don't know what scale to aim for i.e. 1/24  might be a bit big ?  I just wondered is there a scale where I can purchase the guns and mines etc in the correct scale easily. I spotted the ML 100 on your site and it looked fantastic. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
My Kind Regards

Hi John,

Welcome to the forum which I hope you will find helpful.
You have made a good start by Getting John Lamberts plans.

The only fittings that I am aware of that you may find useful are 1/24 available from http://hslmouldings.co.uk/index.htm

At 1/24 you looking at a model 55" long with a total weight of 9.2lbs plenty of scope for two engines etc if you should require them.

At 1/35 (Military Modelling scale you may find some bits and pieces), you're looking at a model 37.7" long with a total weight of 3lbs. The available weight is whats going to cause you problems as its going to be difficult in my opinion to be build down to this weight especially as its your first boat. We all tend to over engineer models.

What period of the war did your father serve on her? They started out as minelayers and later changed to convoy escorts and this will effect the weapons carried.

John Lambert also produces a book called 'Allied Coastal Forces of WWII Volume 1" . This book covers the Fairmile A though there are no pictures of ML104. There are only ten pages much of which is drawings I suspect you allready have but worth getting a copy from the library or perhaps secondhand.

Hope this helps you on your way,

Regards

Thank you, Longshanks,

I think I will go for the 1/24. (I can always build two) My father Herbert James Barrett (DSM) was stationed at HMS Wasp (Dover) and served on ML104 from sept 1941- march 1945, so he saw quite a lot of action and a lot of changes. I do have a fantastic picture(IWM) of him on the bow, just coming into Dover harbour in the early part of the coastal forces war, so I'll try and match the armaments to that era. I do have that book and another called ''coastal forces at war'' (Haynes manual) both very good. Something else that I found was a DVD from the coastal forces heritage site, 3 hrs or bliss.
Thanks for your reply and advice
My Kind Regards

Hi,
I made card-models of Fairmile ML100 and ML103, the scale is 1/250. They were based on John Lambert's book. Perhaps they are of any help. Take a look here

http://cfp.muerell.de/products/category/1

(there is also an English version).
