USS Fitzgerald - June 2016
« Reply #1126 on: June 19, 2017, 12:48:32 am »

This is a rather ungainly pose for an American warship...how could it happen?....we pray for those lost..........

The damage is far from cosmetic....the complete hull appears massively distorted......aluminium stretches before yielding......her name will linger for the Naval Courts-Marshall, however she fade into oblivion and be de-Commissioned and scrapped.....

(Admin)  Quote from BB news:

"What happened?
The collision occurred near Yokosuka, a Japanese port city that is home to the US 7th Fleet, which comprises up to 80 submarines and ships and including the USS Fitzgerald.
It is unclear where the 154-metre (505ft) guided missile destroyer ship was heading at the time.
The ACX Crystal, a 222-metre (730ft) Filipino-flagged container ship, was travelling between the Japanese cities of Nagoya and Tokyo.
Marine traffic records suggest the ACX Crystal made a sudden U-turn roughly 25 minutes before the collision with the USS Fitzgerald. It is not clear why it changed course.
Marine traffic records suggest it was travelling at 14.6 knots (27km/h) at the time of the collision."

It doesn't look much like an accident to me , the container ship did 2 180' course changes and left the warship to her fate by the looks of this, crewed by Philippines personnel I think and they have been suffering from serious Islamic State attacks recently

Whatever the outcome you can't forget about the loss of life incurred. Don't know if anything will happen to the Phillipino's but the yanks on watch are really going to get in ass at the courtsmartial.

area of very heavy shipping movements Brian so she might not have been able to turn away , this might have happened too fast for any action by the bridge crew of the Destroyer to take effective action to avoid or they did and it reduced the damage , we will only know once the report gets published I guess

So no one on the Warship think of taking avoiding action !!

Just shows what was probably happening on the Warship bridge at the time, except no response from the other end.. !!

Hi Martin, the Forum News page seems to have morphed with one on the passing of John Noakes. I reckon you are right about the server room melting and sticking pages together  %%

I'm surprised at Janes sticking it's neck out like that with so little information.

The best! I remember seeing him interviewed once and with tongue firmly in his cheek informed the interviewer that he considered himself, the only and best 'chin-actor' in the world. :-))

This weeks biggest ship. There will be a bigger one along in a few weeks time. They just keep getting larger.

They certainly made sure that it looked full which is a contrast to a lot of container ships that I have seen recently. I wonder how many, if any, empty containers it shipped to achieve that.

Does anyone know what her service speed is. These big ships have also been getting slower to cut fuel consumption.

Hi all, Are we expecting an American squadron (s) to be flying from her initially?  Do the catapults work?

So, a 1:50 scale model will be 5.6 M long ,( wonder if it will be less in 1/4" to the ft scale  ? ) my study is only 3.5 M wall to wall, unless I open the window , but that will leave 2 M sticking out into the garden !

No catapults required , these were off loaded when the STOVL version of the Lightening 11 ( F-35B) was selected as the plane of choice.  Deliveries due to start in 2018 ?
