Just imagine the dribble coming out of a tap if you wanted to fill the bath in an hour. One matelot with a bucket could empty that bath in a couple of minutes!

As has been said, that's why ships have bilge pumps!

Total non-story.

This is what I hate about journalists. They sensationalise anything to make a headline, especially if it is about defense and spending 3 odd billion quid on what they see as a white elephant. Let's see what happens if something kicks off and we need to defend ourselves and we had no way of doing it......they will be the first lot waving the white flag or bemoaning the state of our armed forces.
FFS.........we need someone in power that will stand up to these pandering bufoons, really gets my goat up.

Anywho, small dribble on a seal........am sure this is normal and sure that the incredible skill of the engine room boys can sort it. They are not the best in the world for nothing.

From the info locally she will need a docking to reset the inflatable seal.
Isn't that what trials are for?

It can be done underwater if the damage isn't to bad.

It’s very impressive to see a habitat built around the shaft and the seals replaced in situ. I did have a video somewhere, but I lost it.

I heard, from a 'different' source that the leak is the result of a shaft 15mm out of perfect alignment.

Andy...without being cynical, this 15mm shaft axis out of wack sounds like 'Pub talk'  {-).....in this day and age, digital laser alignment is the norm....[even for British built vessels].........

The HMS Queen Elizabeth QA build records on such matters would have been signed off by a number of Builder Certified and Registered professional Engineers. Such alignment checks during Certification would also have been physically witnessed by RN Engineers

Shaft seal leakage on sizable vessels 10,000 to 100,000 tonne displacement is not an uncommon occurrence.....just ask any sea going ships Engineer....remember, it was only a $20.00 o-ring that created the catastrophic failure of the US Challenger Space Shuttle

I don't know but surely a 15mm misalignment on a shaft that big and it's liable the shake it's self to bits, isn't?

Yes your absolutely correct. Looking at the Guardian article, it says that the article is 3 years old. I am not sure why it on the main page of the website.

Thanks Baldrick......this is I consider to appear as a factual report...it also exposes the Journalistic bias  <*< against the RN  ...... Derek

extract from http://www.savetheroyalnavy.org/hms-queen-elizabeth-a-large-and-convenient-media-target/

"By midday, the BBC website and more serious news outlets were leading on this story and the general public, having been continuously drip-fed negative news on HMS Queen Elizabeth might be forgiven for thinking we have a leaky aircraft carrier with no aircraft. Journalists insist this routine occurrence is a big “story” and doubtless, their editors are very happy with them. It is a story because they have made it so, taking a small fact out of context and magnifying its significance is how one of the less reputable aspects of journalism works. There are several very good defence journalists who have been helpful to the navy’s cause, particularly in the recent current defence funding crisis, but in this instance, the media is making something out of nothing and misleading the public"

We need Desmond Wettern, late defence correspondent for the Telegraph. I shared a cabin with him on exercise in a minesweeper many years ago in another life. A really genuine, knowledgeable
and respected news man.
