Yes, there are loads of irrational numbers as they are called. The square root of 2 (1.414.........) is a well known one, but most square roots come into this category. Google or Wikipedia will tell you more than you ever want to know.

I'm a bit disappointed with the jokes. It has been a pretty devastating event for the French.

If it had happened to St Paul's or Westminster Abbey would we have appreaciated the French poking fun at us at the damage to a national icon?

No need really, if it had happened in the UK then yes I am sure other nationalities would also be thinking up jokes...Probably more so.

As it is , was not the original Notre D pretty well destroyed in WW2, so how much of it is original ?.. Will be interesting to see the rebuild over the next few years..

Firstly there has been a huge worldwide outpouring of sympathy and comments about the Notre Dame fire and absolutely nowhere has there been any suggestion that it is has been a joking matter. Are you suggesting that if St Paul's or Westminster Abbey had been subject to a similar conflagration then our European friends would have been splitting their sides with laughter? If so you have a very weird outlook on human nature.

Secondly, get your history right. The cathedral survived WW2 pretty much untouched.

Yes, you don't have to be religious to appreciate its significance. These old buildings are part of our history and heritage as are the more ancient ones before them such as the Pyramids and Greek temples etc.

Notre Dame will no doubt be restored but probably not as quickly as President Macron suggests!

Firstly , maybe not splitting their sides but there would have been jokes as there always are, as shown here. And maybe no joking matter but regardless I have seen plenty knocking around.

Secondly , Has nothing to do with my History, I asked a question, I did not state a fact, when I googled ND WW2 it would appear the pictures that came up were for another Cathedral (but looked very similar ) which did nor appear to be fairing very well, yes maybe I should have looked into the picture a bit more , but I did not so hay ho..
I have been up to the top of ND, found it fascinating ,( also have a heavy concrete replica Gargoyle from there as well I believe.) the fact I found some of the light hearted jokes amusing does not mean I do not feel empathy for the French, after all that is where some of my family originate from.

If you are going to make statements online best to check your facts a bit more closely, this is why there is so much inaccuracy and fake news.

I like a joke as much as anyone else but in these sort of circumstances they should be initiated by those most affected. There are jokes at funerals to lighten the atmosphere but best initiated by those most closely involved.

Yes, there may have been plenty of jokes knocking around but unfortunately some people are like that and we just have to live with them, doesn't mean it is the decent response.

Obviously we all have differing senses of humour. I prefer not to make fun of the obvious sadness of the French people in this instance. We can have a joke when the different proposals for the replacement spire are published no doubt.

Yes, the offers of donations from various people are a bit questionable. They get publicity and tax breaks. The money was not forthcoming to maintain the structure before the fire because nobody was very interested - just another facet of human nature.

As always, people rarely appreciate what they have until they lose or come close to losing it. Ironically the fire will probably ultimately leave the cathedral in a better state than it would otherwise have been in had the existing renovation programme continued.

But that is a separate matter from the impact of the fire on the French nation and elsewhere.
