Patric Moore
« Reply #202 on: December 09, 2012, 11:03:18 pm »

Astronomer, pianist and xylophonist extraordinaire Patrick More passed away today, aged 89. A sad loss, another great British eccentric gone. He has however left a legacy we can all enjoy, the many thousands of hours of film and other recorded media that he made throughout his life.

It was very sad news indeed to hear of the death of Sir Patrick Moore. The man was a legend. He was responsible for inspiring many to look up into the night sky, myself included. And for once, I genuinely look forward to the tribute programmes that will inevitably be broadcast.

A very sad day.  I watched the series from the start, six months before Sputnik One.  His programmes and books inspired my love of Astronomy.  I was an amateur observer for many years, with a six inch reflector, and an active member of the British Astronomical Association.  I was privileged to have met him twice.
The sky was lost when they installed sodium lighting down our street

It is difficult to imagine a Universe without him.

Tug in the Channel, off Devon

Bit of a cock-up on the towing front out in the channel this morning... Knowing nothing about towing whatsoever, I would have thought there would have been systems in place to stop this happening. Looks pretty serious though and I see the helicopters from Chivenor here attended......

Martin,
Yes, at Bribie island which is really close to Brisbane and connected by a road bridge.
Unfortunately at night when the wind changes we batten down the hatches to keep out the smoke, not to mention the Highway hazards with visibility reduced by smoke.

Good news, should ease up in a day or so.

Tasmania is worse, as they have actually lost buildings, so we are not to bad of with a little smoke to worry about.

New South Wales is in the firing line and copping it as well. Think Moderator Peter, may also be close to the action as there are also blazes in his neck of the woods.

Cool change and rain would help the firefighters no end.

Aren't they welded?  No rivets to count.  Bet somebody would still claim the paint was the wrong colour.

No fires close to us, and you couldn't start a fire on our farm if you tried, the grass is too green O0  We have been lucky as regards rain, and had some more yesterday.

I hope the fire on Bribie Island is put out soon, as we are going there for a week with our caravan on 11th February.

It is getting there, less smoke problems last night and a cool change is now here.
At least you won't have to worry about any camp fires getting out of control, nothing left to burn.
