The old Mallaig to Armadale ferry was fun as well, it had a lift and turntable so it came alongside a normal pier, you drove onto the lift which lowered you to the car deck then the crew spun the turntable to point you to where they wanted you to park. I remember having to climb out the car window because we were packed in so tightly i couldn't open the door far enough.
In the '60s, while working in the motor industry, I used the Severn Ferry frequently during test drives. The ferries had turntables in the centre of the car deck alongside the folding bulwarks, and the ship's car deck crew would spin you and your car around to the correct angle to face the next empty spot on the deck while you were still driving aboard! For newcomers it must have been a frightening experience as they'd almost always stop as soon as they arrived on the turntable, only to be waved onwards right away.
Of course we old stagers just took it our stride.
That all ended when the Severn Bridge was opened in September 1966, and I'd crossed on the ferry two days before.
