But how much longer will Mallard's record continue? --- http://www.smartplanet.com/blog/cities/new-biomass-powered-train-to-travel-at-130-mph/3286

I was interested to hear that the Mallard wasn't really attempting the speed record but it was originally scheduled for a brake test!  :o

Don't know if this is correct but my father always referred to his dynomometer as a "brake". The brake in this case being a centrifugal pump pumping water. The load on the engine being tested was increased by opening the discharge valve on the pump. For cold weather testing the engine under test was coupled to a big fan.  He always said that the dynos in use at many "tuning" places today are not real dynos in the true sense of the word.

That was what we now call a "cover story" to keep the accountants happy beforehand and the press quiet just in case.
The dynamometer car was essentially a travelling spring balance to measure drawbar pull and a collection of other instruments to measure brake line pressure and co-incidentally a very accurate speedometer.

Amusing that they show an old funnel top engine, you can be assured that not only will they not be using that type but is more likely to look like one of the latest designs and it certainly won't have valve gear. More likely to have a steam turbine so Mallards type record won't be beaten.

I liked the quote from the BBC 24 Hour News guy outside the hospital yesterday morning:
"There will be much more from here during the day....................but none of it news".
Name? I see 'George' is the bookies' favourite (6/1) although my money's on 'Kevin'.

There are a lot more people, wholly supported by the taxpayer, who do less towards it than the royals. That, however, is veering towards the political and so we must not discuss it further here.

I never knew he was actually a real Chicago police officer before he took up acting. All we ever got in that line was John Stalker trying to flog blinds and awnings!

Whilst at work the BAe intranet system informed me that the last Astute class submarine has been laid down, to be named HMS Ajax, the first two Astute and Ambush have been fully accepted into service today too. Hopefully they will prove to be purposeful vessel and the Astute incident was just a glitch!
